Anyone For Tennis (2019)?

Post by slacker »

Bollox to Brexit, Trump’s visit, grubby Tory Leadership elections, and all the other crap. The sun’s out! There’s cricket on! And, even better, the 2nd Tennis Slam of the year is well underway. A plucky Brit (well, Aussie really) has even made it to week 2 of the French Open.

The usual suspects cruising in the Mens Singles - with Nadal the one to beat on his favourite clay surface. But in the Womens there feels a changing of the guard is gathering pace, with Serena Williams still dangerous but past her best, and a number of others with a major title or two to their name already, who can all win it but aren’t unbeatable. I fancy Halep, but I say that most tournaments and she usually throws in a stinker along the line.

I was watching a bit of it this past week, and over three different channels showing three different games none of the courts were packed, mostly empty. Now if that was Wimbledon they'd be packed, why is the French Open so unloved? Or is it cos its early games and they don't bother?

Clashes with their demonstrations to be fair.

It’s the usual Corporate crap where they would rather be guzzling fizz and stuffing their faces rather than watch the tennis. It drives French tennis fans who can’t get tickets just as nuts as it does us over here.

Halep very impressive today, and steams ahead. Osaka out.

Are the lot that turn up at Wimbledon fans or just turn up as an event? Do they follow tennis all year round?

It’s a mixture. Most of the show court tickets go via a (vastly oversubscribed) public ballot or LTA affiliated tennis clubs. It’s generally fans, but some inevitably end up in touts hands. About 20 per cent of show court tickets go to Corporate blaggers, via “sponsor” firms. These are often the empty seats you see on Centre Court etc whilst they are wining and dining in the hospitality areas.

You have to queue up on the day for outside court ground passes, so again that’s either fans or, sometimes, tourists in town ticking Wimbledon off their must-see list. Well worth doing if you ever fancied going on the cheap. If they are prepared to queue again from about 5, they can often snaffle the discarded Corporate tickets because a lot of the gits on a jolly leave early.

Unlike most sports I actually much prefer the women's competition to the men's in tennis unless Federer is playing who is just incredible. Even though the men's game is clearly more powerful the ladies game is nice to watch. Other than the odd athlete in the olympics the WTA probably has the best female sports athletes on the planet.

Wimbledon is not as oversubscribed as you might think. I have a 75% success rate and once got men’s finals tickets. Also a lot of people don’t take up outside courts after first week as it is mostly doubles. And ticketmaster sell a limited number of tickets on the day.

Best if it happens is middle Sunday, where you can buy online and get on court 1 and centre court for a fairly reasonable price.

All of the above. I go to Wimbledon and ATP at O2, and watch Grand Slams on TV. Don’t watch too much outside that, but plenty who go to Wimbledon know little more than top 4 men and Williams sisters.

Blimey. Sort-of-Brit Konta has just dispatched Sloane Stephens 6-1 6-4 to progress to the semis.

She’s on fire at the moment, hopefully she’s got herself back together and can compete at the top level once more.

Do you just write to the lawn tennis club for tickets or do they send you a form ?

Used to be in the 60s & 70s a letter wrtiien every year for 5 or so & then youd start to get a bit lucky from then on

Wimbledon Ballot 2020

Post by RientO »

Will be online from next year, but much the same process.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/48103327

Since 1924 Wimbledon has sold the majority of its tickets through a postal ballot, which requires fans to send a stamped addressed envelope to receive an application form, which they then need to post back to the All England Club to enter the ballot.

The completed forms need to be returned by the end of the December before the July championships and fans cannot apply for specific dates or courts.

The system is set to remain the same for the online application, just without the paper and stamps.

As half expected, highest remaining seed (3) and reigning champ Halep gets rolled over in the QF. Didn’t see it so don’t know if she threw in a stinker or this new kid on the block, Anisimova, is the dogs wotsits. Whatever, they’ll be a new slam winner now.

In the mens, it’s all much more predictable, with the top 4 seeds cruising through to the semis.

Oh well. Tight one, but lost in 2 sets. Bloody Aussie :x

Number 8 seed Barty won the other semi in 3 sets. Federer taking on Nadal now. Be a big upset if Rog wins this on clay.

They sell them every day at 9am on ticketmaster. Centre court, court 1 and court 3.

Different for different courts and different days. £83 for centre court today, but increases to £225 for men’s final.
Court 1 is cheaper in second week, and you can get into it on final day for less than £40. Similar with court 2 and 3.

It’s £225. I paid £350 for a pair 4 years ago. Most I have paid for anything, sports, concerts or theatre.
