By conceding less than 1 goal per game
Salford have played 35 matches & have conceded 29 goals . Are there any other questions you need answering on how the League tables work ?

Yes....is it correct that only one stat really matters, and that’s the one which says “points”?

Well not really .
1988/9 our promotion year , also saw 1 of the closest finishes in football league history .Aresenal & Liverpool both gained 76 points both had a goal difference of +37 .So Arsenal having a higher goals scored column which won them the league . Those little percentage fractions are very important sometimes !
