Amritsar massacre

Post by Disoriented »

Isn’t it time we apologised rather than simply expressing ‘regret’?

Yes.

I never knew until recently that Michael O' Dwyer, the lieutenant governor of the Punjab at the time of the cold blooded murder of 100s of Indians was shot dead in 1940 at the Caxton Hall by Umdah Singh.

No, it was because he did a runner from Singh's restaurant - what do you think?

Why should we apologize, express regret or anything else?

I certainly did not carry out the massacre, not did I instruct anyone to carry it out.

The persons who ordered or carried out the massacre are the only people who have anything to apologize for...even then, the victims are all long since dead, so there is no one to apologize for

Before I even got to the bottom of the thread, I pretty much predicted your reply word for word.

Hmmm. The ol’ Turkish defence re the Armenian genocide, spenny.

When you say “we”, nobody is expecting you to personally apologise for any historic wrongs/injustices. But Her Majesty’s Govt is a constitutional continuation of forebears responsible for earlier UK actions. The executive reviews and apologises for earlier State-sanctioned injustices quite regularly, which you’ll know as a legal eagle.

Its a load of bollicks demanding apologies from people who had nothing to do with it

Have the French apologised for killing King Harold @Battle in 1066?

The Romans for its brutal treatment of the Ancient Britons etc

Let's stop all this nonsense about demanding apologies from people for things they haven't don

No one alive now was involved in any of these events. Any apology is just a waste of words. Let's live in the now. Nothing can change the past

So you are unable to answer the facts I have stated?

Are you demanding apologies from the French for the Death of King Harrold or from the Romans for their treatment of ancient Britons?

What about the Jews for their treatment of Early Christians?

No? Strange this demanding apologies is selective

Harry wasn't killed by the French, but by the Normans (i.e. vikings).

If you think I'm going to waste my time getting stuck into your wilfully stupid examples of false equivalence, I'm sorry to disappoint.

Unlike some I don’t jump to conclusions, especially if someone knows the answer. Easier to ask. Smarter don’t you think.

No. I wonder if countries went down that route there would be a long list of apologies doing the rounds. It’s history, let it stay that way.

How far back does history go?

The Japanese have never apologised for their WW2 atrocities.

Is that okay?

It is not like an apology for spilling a pint. This is to recognise a century of agony for these families who have pit up with mealy-mouthed ‘regrets’ for that long for what was nothing short of a murderous act with catastrophic consequences.

Next Prez will be saying Bloody Sunday was justified.

Can anyone give me a rough estimate of how much such an apology might cost the UK if we were to make it?
