Holiday Thread

Post by Constanza »

Off to Rome in a couple of weeks- anyone got any tips? Will be staying well clear of usual attractions as I have seen Gladiator three times and wont grace the Pope's Pad with my presence. Looking for alternatives- markets, cheap food, leather bars etc.
Probably camping again later, hopefully near Dingle.

Why do you want to stay clear of the usual attractions? They are the main reason to visit Rome.

Over 2,000 years of history, why bother with bars and markets?

Unbelievable that you want to swerve Rome’s history. In my view there is no point going to Rome if you do that. The sites are remarkable.

Did a trip to Italy in Easter, and went from Rome to Sorrento via Naples, Vesuvius and Pompeii. It's definitely worth doing the historical stuff, but I do recommend the official guided tours. They help you understand the back story and context so much better. Some of the hidden secrets in the artwork contained in the Vatican museums and Sistine chapel were worth the ticket price alone.

But be prepared for horrendous crowds and you have to be on your guard for hustlers the whole time. Rome is a living, working city and has to balance the influx of tourists with the needs of its workers and residents. I loved it as it was non-stop and active, while 'er indoors felt overwhelmed by it all.

I'd recommend staying away from the city centre for shops and restaurants. They're all either cheap tourist tat or expensive ripp-offs. Assume that anyone who approaches you in the street is trying to hustle you. Evenings are better spent strolling around Trastevere, which is more relaxed and civilised. You can also catch a train from Termini to Ostia Antica, if you fancy a picnic amongst the ruins of the old coastal city.

As for me, I'll be taking advantage of the free movement of capital and people to spend a few breaks in Chez Dunners en Perpignan. I also have 10 nights in Sardinia in August. Can't handle being stuck in the UK for more that two months at a time.

Thank you all - good tips there.
Just to confirm I have done rome before and this time looking for something different.
One of my pet hates is looking at famous art etc whilst surrounded by ruckscks.
I usually aim to get to such sights either very early or even better just before closing.

I’m in New York atm. 31 degrees today. Too much. Enjoying my first time here though. Very much like London, with less homeless people...

Something a bit different this year off to Slovenia and Lake Bled. Friends of ours went two years ago and said it was spectacular - downside is I'm missing the first week of the new season.

Beautiful place, one of the best places in this country. I'd rather go there than abroad. Even though my wife's family live there she would rather go abroad than go there. Personally I think she's mad, but then again she puts up with me so she must be mad!

Went there once and it was really beautiful. Can recommend the Postojna cave system.

Sounds like you are looking at rucksacks when surrounded by famous art. Never been to Rome. Ice cream is good allegedly.

Off to Bordeaux/Dordogne at end of June for a week. Beer in August and Lanzarote in October.

There will also be 3 or 4 fishing trips around the Highlands too. This summer is going to be a belter.
