Never really saw the best of him. Not really fit, got a knock, unfortunate. With a decent preseason he could come good.

Says alot about what kind of team we were last season
3 of our top 5 are defenders
Most M.O.Ms were GK 2 defenders 1 midfielder 1 forward/midfielder .

Need to raise the levels next season from
Midfield & Forwards.

Macca with all his goals nowhere to be seen.

There will always be a reason why JS does not perform - and that's why we can't afford to carry him into next season. Even with 3 months in the squad JE never trusted him as a "go to" man even from the bench. Was worth a punt for this season but it never worked out. Pity, but JS's time with us has passed I feel.

Agreed it's interesting he never even made the bench yesterday. Whereas you could have taken off the 2 forwards and replaced them with Harold and Simpson. Like littlemate said JE couldn't have trusted or more likely had faith in him.

How can that be ?
We were told by some on this forum that Simpson was going to ''Rip It'' in the National League !!
Suggestions by myself and a few others that we would be signing a player who would quite likely not be match fit, a player who had done nothing much of note since his 2015/16 first half of the season goal glut.......... were ignored by his Forum Fan Club !!
Lets be honest, it was a signing that did not work out and I am surprised that same as in Kevin Nolan's case, we can have players in training with us for a month or so and YET never be able to work it out that these players are nowhere near fit enough to gain a regular place in the team.
All these modern fitness methods, electronic monitors etc we are told about, perhaps they are not all they are cracked up to be !!

Sid you were right if that's what you were saying. Remember we were on a losing streak, we needed goals and we knew he did well before under bad circumstances. Can't remember what or if I commented on it, but I'd have taken that gamble on him, even now looking back it was worth the try in my opinion. Shame it never happened for him or us.

I'm a bit surprised Clay got 6 MOTM but didn't make the top 5. Bizarre.

I wasn't a big fan of his after seeing him at Motherwell and last season but he's had a very good season. More of the same please.

Pleased for Clay this season, In his first season you could see him trying but he rarely hit the heights, always felt that he could crack it with us, he became the main engine, the drive of the team, next to Macca the first man on my team sheet, both have superb engines, work rate of both second to none

Because there are 40 other games, perhaps.

The 5 listed by Adz all had better seasons than him but appreciate you wouldn’t be aware of that based on the 1 game you saw.

TBH I think marks are shifted depending on the player.

Ling and Alabi came in for a fair amount of stick, a bad game for them would see them get rated at 2 or 3. Someone who is in the good books would get 4 or 5 when they had a bad game (Marv had some in the second half of the season).

Clay had some good games but as I said on the other thread, Coulson was a better player overall. It helped him massively that the three other central midfielders we had were in the bottom five players, just like an average guys chance of pulling at a club would be improved if all the other guys were mingers.

Er, asking for an average friend.

Clay is only not in there because of certain boarders refusal to accept his quality in this team.

I agree with Red Army, he was certainly better than where he placed in my opinion. Our season were to pot when he was out injured and we went on our amazing run when he returned.

However, over the whole season I thought that Joe was our most consistent performer. I’m not knocking any player and I agree JC was brilliant as were others, but for me Joe was the most consistent.

Who do you think he was better than out of those 5 (and Bonne)? I'd have him as 7th behind that lot, which is perfectly acceptable given how consistent so many of our players were.

When did our season 'go to pot'?

The dip in results when he was out is explained by Eagy's point above - the complete lack of a suitable replacement (or even a partner, for a lot of the season!) was the issue here.

When He was out injured. Yes I’d agree as well that the depth was an issue in his position, as with another clay type player to replace him we’d have won the league by about 15 points.
