Decent Goals

Yep. Decent goals and they really cocked up that clear chance at 1-0 down. The guy had all the time in the world to take a touch and lash it in but made the wrong choice. Confident we would still have won though.

Worth also pointing out that he was left all alone on our right side, which goes to show that despite recent change of personnel there we've still not fully sorted out the tactics that expose us in that position.

The reason the bloke was unmarked at the back post was not because they had targeted our right back, as was the case. Totally different.

I didn't say it was because they targeted our right back though. There is clearly more to it than only the personnel deployed at right back.

I don’t follow.

The chance (not goal, remember) yesterday was as a result of Happes heavy touch and losing the ball and Widdowson getting caught too far upfield. Akinola had to come across and cover yesterday, he had no choice.

All those goals blamed on Ling were where he wasn’t marking closely enough, being beaten to the ball or slicing it into his own net. Totally different.

You seem to have a bit of a chip on your shoulder about Ling here, which is especially odd when I've not said anywhere that he wasn't at fault or not contributing to us conceding goals or chances previously. I'm really pleased that we upgraded at right back. But support elsewhere on that side is also an issue, as it also was in games started by Thomas and Akinola. There was nobody even close to that guy with only Clay making a token effort to get back and cover.

It doesn't matter if it was a chance or a goal because if you keep allowing chances like that then you will concede goals. It's also no use saying "Yeah but Ling" like you are, because if we do that we won't take responsibility for fixing something that has been an issue for a lot of the season.

I assume Clay was aiming for the bottom left corner with that shot?

No chip, mate. I just don’t think he’s anywhere near good enough to be a L2 footballer. The performances since he’s been dropped prove that.

What do you think is the issue that’s causing these chances then?

Nice bit of solid defence from Widdowson in the build-up to the 4th goal, good to see him back in the side

I'm not his biggest fan but Brophy had a big part to play in both open play goals - especially Clay's goal as the dirty work is not something usually associated with him. Deserves a big pat on the back.

The dirty work is absolutely something associated with him. He’s not the strongest but is a proper grafter.

In a strange way, I’d say the best thing about playing him on the left of the front 3 is what he provides defensively. Widdowson got much more protection from Brophy than Brophy has all season from any of Ruel/JMD/Wilko etc

Think we need to sort out cover on the right side from the right side of the midfield/right sided winger, either from the instructions given to them being more willing to offer support. In the game Thomas started the commentators specifically referenced the lack of support from Wilkinson on the right for example, and we saw Barrow nearly score a late winner from a free header a few yards out when they easily got down our right in a game where Ling wasn't on the pitch at the time.

Ling clearly mainly contributed to the problems down that side when he played. But with Brophy at left back I think there was a deliberate focus to provide more midfield cover on the left side for him to get forward and teams targetted our right because of the space there and the fact Ling was such an average player. Brophy obviously didn't play there yesterday but still we were exposed for that chance because the midfield was not switched on enough to get what was happening and provide the cover needed. It's why I feel having a George Marsh type in midfield alongside Cissé would make us stronger and then have McAnuff or even JMD ahead of those two pulling the strings.

After watching Clay score his goal, I honestly didn't know that he could run that fast.
