Once again a great show and thanks for reading
out my question ...
Once again I just can’t get out of my head that we maybe classing Joe Widdowson
as the 4th centre half, because of the system and wanting to play Brophy
as left back, we can now class Joe as 4th centre half..
Barely 5 years ago we could count on Clarke, Baudry & Cuthbert at centre half
leading the club to have one of its most successful seasons in years ..
Alan Comfort one of the best players to wear the O’s kit in the last 40 years
was an out and out left winger we wouldn’t be asking him to play left back
and we shouldn’t be doing that with Brophy who is probably the only player
as the club who can run at full backs ..
Widdowson had a good 2nd season at the club and richly deserved his new
contract at the club but surely that would be playing left back not as back
up centre half same as Brophy should be left wing as opposed to full back
where he’s wasted ..

Thanks Hedmans. Glad you enjoyed the show. Nice to have matches to talk about. Glen speaks really well I think.

Cuthbert played most of that season as right back...

The game has changed in the past 5 years and the focus is on having marauding fullbacks supplementing the attack as per Liverpool, Man City etc. I don't feel Brophy is as effective as a left winger. At left back, he has far more space to use and his explosive pace can really create damage and in a counter attack, even more so.
As for Widdowson at centre half, well he can do it at a push when we have injuries/suspensions. In the same way, we may have to use Ling when Cisse is out even though he wont be as effective as Cisse.

1) We’re not playing wingers. We’re playing a ham fisted 4-3-3 which is really a 4-5-1 but with strikers out wide.
2) Brophy isn’t clinical enough to be a winger. The attacking full back role, which is how the game has gone, is absolutely perfect for him.
Widowson is going to be overtaken by Shad in the pecking order soon as well, redeploying him as CB makes perfect sense. It’s a role he can play comfortably and is arguably better suited to. Let’s be honest, going forwards was never his strong point.
The issues with our formation are not with these positions.

I do agree with last nights contributors that on current games played, we do seem to have a strong squad BUT, the real test comes from Saturday onwards.
Agree that confidence of the players can be a huge thing. I still remember when we crushed Carlisle away 1-5 first game of the season - that really gave us all confidence let alone the players - and we nearly made to the Championship.

Confidence breeds success of that there is no doubt. We’ve made a good start of that I’m pleased about, I’ve made my prediction and we will see where we end up, he higher he better. The only reservation I have is the depth of the squad and I hope that the young players are able to make further progress this season. The fact that Ling has not signed further and has said the youth have a part to play suggests to me they are quietly confident of their ability to do just that. It may be that they dip in and dip out the team as part of their development, but they are fresh each time the call is made.

Good show but maybe needed a little bit of research first. Spent 5 minutes discussing why Ling was preferred to Kyprianou and Shabbani in midfield and should they be knocking on Embleton door to find out why.
They are both injured as was mentioned on the commentary on Tuesday night.

The depth of the squad is actually pretty damn good.
Justin always banged on about a squad of 22 with 2 players in genuine competition for each place, supported by kids. He didn’t have time to achieve that but Ross seems to have run with it and other than a couple of positions - most notably the holding CM - we’re pretty much there.

super show
we have a good settled squad, which hopefully will be an advantage
Still reckon we need a centre back, and Piergianni would have been a good shout
The question were will we finish, dont know what the deliberation was
we will finish 7th and get promoted at wembley !
Thanks Andy
