Arsenal plan to make redundancies due to COVID

Remember all the big hooha (whatever you call it) when Tottenham and Liverpool were going to furlough staff and how the clubs had to do a hard u-turn when the public expressed their displeasure. Is this not worse surely, especially when you consider they pay 3 players, that rarely get a game, a combined £600k per WEEK. How is that even allowed to happen, it’s obscene. Football went wrong a long time ago but this is end of days territory surely? especially with everything up in the air for a long time thanks to COVID 19.

Also, they’re talking about redundancies and in the next breath there is talk of a new improved contract for the goalscorer (rumoured to be around the £200k per week mark)

Only in football :~

This is an absolutely disgusting decision by Arsenal Football Club.

Given the amount that some of their players are earning, these redundancies are an utter disgrace - particularly when I assume that many of these staff have been more loyal to the Club, than the vast majority of the playing squad will ever be.

The Arsenal Board should hang their bloody heads in shame. Despicable.

As my arsenal supporting mate said it's obscene paying ozil 350k a week and sacking people on 30k.

Obscene as it may be it still makes sense. Football is no different than any other entertainment industry. If you needed to save money on your latest film you'd bin off production staff before the actors.

Players have taken a 12.5% pay cut and executives have taken a 33%+

It's disappointing to see but if games are to remain behind closed doors then sadly some positions will be, redundant.

Ozil’s position has been redundant for 5 months, he hasn’t kicked a ball, in which time Arseanal have paid him approx £7,000,000

Top Division football is rotten to the core.

I know the football world has gone crazy but in the perfect world i would like to think if i was earning wages of £250,000 a week (1million) a month and other employees in the same organisation were on £50,000 a year and facing redundancy, then myself and fellow players could afford something like a 10% pay cut to help save jobs.
I dont actually think it is the players fault but Arsenal football club are trying to make a minimal saving in difficult times yet they can still offer excisting players new contracts with around £100,000 per week pay increases or they are signing new players with either/both massive transfer and signing on fees.
The club need to find the answers to thier financial issues but making certain employees redundant and at the same time spending lavishly on excisting or new employees does not sit morally right with any normal person.

It's my understanding that not all the players agreed to a pay cut. The arguement being that the % cut wasn't fair as some players earnt more than others and therefore would have to cut more. Modern day team spirit for you right there.... :~

The footballers play football not staff. It is the way the football model works.

Pay cuts would reduce the percentages to the people who rule football, namely the agents. That will never happen.

That's the moron's at Arsenal who do their transfer dealings I'm sure no-one would turn down a massive pay hike if their boss offered it to them.

That contract they gave to Ozil has caused them so many issues and problems. No one can blame Ozil for signing it, who would'ant. Mr Wenger did some great things but offering this contract was not one of them.

Depends on the roles they are making redundant. If they are roles based around match day like selling corporate tickets, then it makes sense to make them redundant as there is no work in the foreseeable future and they cannot easily be re-deployed. Alternatively, they will be paying another 55 people to sit around doing nothing just like their top earner...
