Do you buy a magazine anymore?

Post by Constanza »

After the demise of Q Magazine etc I wonder how periodicals etc can survive.
I used to get NME, The Face, then more recently Private Eye, Viz and When Saturday Comes. I'm ashamed to admit I've let them all go and just browse online now with podcasts.
I'm glad I gave up my dream of journalism years ago.

I’ll buy cycling weekly every now and then. Sometimes buy the Big Issue. Maybe a Football magazine if there’s some interesting articles

still get WSC (400th issue out now), and will happily nose through an Economist or Newsweek sometimes.

For music, I'll sometimes browse Quietus articles online for free, but that's it. Is Kerrang still going, and under the editorship of our former boarder?

Nope. My youth was spent reading music papers and magazines, but kids today watch YouTube videos and Instagram and Snapchat. There may remain a niche market for magazines but it's a diminishing one.

I will read stuff online, and only ever buy Viz as a last minute decision at the airport.

A few weeks ago I took out a subscription for Private Eye, to relieve my boredom. Initially I found it very unfunny compared to many years ago. I think that may have been due to lockdown, and most watering holes out of bounds. Last few issues been more interesting. Perhaps sources are more lubricated now.

I used to buy ones that involved my interests at the time, e.g motorcycle magazines back in the 60s, some camera ones in the 1980s but nothing much since then. Most information that I need now can be found online.

I've subscribed to Uncut for a few years now (moved on from Q, so feeling a bit guilty). Currently sitting next to a pile of unopened ones but it doesn't break the bank so don't mind.

Used to get computer related ones (yes I know, nerd) but stopped once they went past the £5 barrier. Considering half the content is adverts it didn't seem a great deal. Websites and blogs have took over a lot of that review style content and how-to stuff is mostly YouTube now.

WSC, Big Issue, the occasional Viz, National Trust, although that’s part of the subs so you get that whether you like it or not.

Get digital copies to read on tablet free via library membership. Have a look on your libraries website, there should be instructions.

Bought Q loyally for years, up until about 1995. Used to enjoy the wordy writing style it had at the time.

Not bought this, or indeed any other magazine, for at least 15 years. I'm part of the problem.

Also used to buy football magazines in the 60s and 70s plus when at school in the 50s always had weekly comics like the Eagle, The Beano and The Dandy.
I wish I had kept those old comics, some like the Eagle are worth a lot of money now. I still have some of the yearly comic book annuals and also have most of my old motorbike and football magazines from the 60s and 70s when I used to buy them.

I am a long time subscriber to Mojo, Empire and When Saturday Comes (have had a WSC subscription since about the 10th/12th edition). Have never seen a reason to change to digital copies. Also buy the occasional magazine when travelling, I find them easier to read when on the move.

Greener? Nah, mags all get recycled. Cheaper? Maybe so but, personally, I'm happy to pay a bit more to get them in my preferred format.

The production, transport and recycling have an impact.

The mantra is reduce, reuse, recycle. Reduce is the best option. Recycling though great consumes a huge amount of energy and sometimes chemicals.
