Re- Traveller's Trial
When I was in hospital recovering from cardiac arrest, they evetually moved me out of intensive care, the guy in the next bed was a Traveller. He was fine ( not health wise ) ; but I will show you how their lifestyle makes them their own worst enemy.
You have no privacy in a NHS ward. When you are lying there wired up to an ECG, you listen out, or die of boredom. I soon found out that this guy was a lapsed Traveller. The Council had put him in his own little house & I think Social Services were sorta keeping an eye on him. I found out he was illiterate. Like me he was Type 2 diabetic, badly controlled. He must have had some other issues too. A lot of the time he was fast akip, as that is what too much blood sugar does to you. Every morning they give you a sheet of paper with the days meal choices. Because he couldn't read ( most Travellers don't think too much of education ). The food list went in the bin. They must have known on his notes that he couldn't read, but they don't have time for that sort of detail. So when he woke up, he would take himself off to the canteen and have a good fry up. When his visitors came, they heard he didn't think too much of the ( non-existent ) food, so they brought him copious quantities of chocolate, white bread sarnies and Coke. Thinking of his health, they did bring large bottles of fresh orange juice. Which is packed with sugar. I truly felt sorry for the geezer as the system didn't work for him. He was slowly killing himself off. The Government really should do more to normalise these people's lifestyles.

Encouraging them to learn to read would be a start. I’m sure schooling was available should he want to learn. But best to expect the Government to do more. Maybe they should take advantage of what’s available first.

Have you seen Tyson Furys daily diet ?
Pretty damn healthy , for a guy in full training.

I don’t think it’s a traveler thing. Most people don’t have the first clue about healthy diets or how to look after themselves.

But most people know how to read & write & most people with diabetes try and do something about it. Although it is not easy.

Re: Re- Traveller's Trial
You seem to be very naive on the subject of gypsy's (travellers) .Let me tell you a few stories out of many that happened while I was working in a hospital for 38yrs.
When one of their relatives or gypsy friends were in patients on a ward the rest would gather round the ward entrances and block peoples way into the ward and be very awkward and extremely abusive ,then at meal time they would all go down to the dining room and just walk through taking what ever food they wanted without paying for any of it ,pushing and shoving as they went .This was usually a crowd of apprx 10 to 20 travellers each time .
The police were usually called but they stood outside the main doors not wanting to arrest in case a ruck started .
Cable from an emergency generator was stolen and widely believed to have ended up at one of the traveller camps .Police suspected it but would not go in.
They also used to congregate on mass around the mortuary when one of their own passed away ,stopping other relatives from viewing their loved ones .
This is just a small example of what utter scumbags these people are .

Re: Re- Traveller's Trial
Well that's taught me something.
Travellers have a poor diet; and are illiterate.
Let's look at UK diet for a moment.
Based upon 2019 N.H.S. statistics; the majority of UK adults are now either overweight or obese; 67% of men and 60% of women. This included 26% of men and 29% of women who were obese.
Meanwhile, very worringly, 20% of year 6 children were classified as obese.
This would clearly indicate that the issue of a poor diet is somewhat more prevalent in the UK, than just from within the Traveller Community.
Meanwhile, the most recent survey of Adult Skills undertaken for the UK Literacy Trust, the PIAAC (Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies) found that 16.4% (or 1 in 6) of adults in England, and 17.9% (or 1 in 5) adults in Northern Ireland, have literacy levels at or below Level 1, which is considered to be 'very poor literacy skills'.
Just to clarify that Entry Level 1 is equivalent to literacy levels at age 5-7. Adults below Entry Level 1 may not be able to write short messages to family or read a road sign.
Clearly, there must be Millions more Travellers in the UK than I would have initially imagined?

Re: Re- Traveller's Trial
It's too easy to tar a whole community like Travellers, like here and the killed copper thread, because of the rotten actions of a few scumbags.
We've got Travellers camped on the adjacent farm, as they do every year whilst working for the farmer and others in the neighbourhood. Polite and considerate as anything, no bother at all, and never leave a mess. They aren't all terrible people.

Re: Re- Traveller's Trial
It was only seems like yesterday I was trying to sell a 4500 euro designer leather sofa. As I described the quality frame, high grade leather and foam and fibre interior, just behind the customer was a traveller taking a dump next to the shop window.
I think it was the juxtaposition of needless consumerism and lack of hygiene facilities for the disadvantaged that led to the collapse of a potential sale.

Are their turds a different colour?
As for the sale - or rather the lack of it. Couldn't that have possibly been down to your sales technique; or indeed the potential customer thinking €4,500 was a bit steep for a sofa; 'designer' or otherwise?

Are you saying world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury has no clue about diet or how to look after himself?Apple Wumble wrote: ↑Sat Jul 25, 2020 7:25 pm I don’t think it’s a traveler thing. Most people don’t have the first clue about healthy diets or how to look after themselves.

The more calories you burn, the more you can consume without it being unhealthy. An elite athlete who trains twice or more a day at great intensity needs to eat a lot more. It’s not hard.

And all calories aren't equal. If you eat 5000 calories a day, all in McDonalds burgers and burn the majority off, it's still going to be bad for your heart, stomach, blood sugar, etc...

Care to explain? I mean fair enough if you think eating 500 calories via sweets is the same as getting it via a couple of avocado's then there's not much point having this argumentMillennial Snowflake wrote: ↑Sun Jul 26, 2020 11:55 amLmao. Re: Re- Traveller's Trial
Hi mate, sorry for the late reply. Let me explain-
A calorie is a calorie no matter its source - if someone ate 500 calories of sweets, the effect on their health and weight would be the same as someone who ate 500 calories from avocados. You can consume 3000 calories a day by only eating sweets, but if you burned 3000 calories in the same day you wouldn't gain any weight. If you burned 3500 calories a day you'd lose weight, even if you were only eating sweets, because calories out > calories in. I certainly wouldn't recommend such a diet, but that's a fact! It's obesity that causes heart disease, diabetes etc., not the foods directly.
You're thinking of satiety scores rather than calories. Sweets, McDonald's burgers etc. are relatively high in calories (McDonald's actually not as high in calories as people think, but I digress) but are low satiety foods. Fruit and veg are low in calories but nutrient-dense and generally high satiety foods. That means if I ate a happy meal for lunch at 500 cal, I'd probably be hungry again within an hour and therefore at risk of overeating. If I ate some chicken, pasta and a salad with the same amount of calories, it'd fill me up for longer. However if I had the first meal and didn't eat afterwards despite my urges to, there would be no further effect on my body or my health.
The last para is what a lot of people fail to understand and why we've miseducated just about everyone into thinking they can't have certain foods or they'll get fat.
Hope this makes sense
