Assistant Manager

On the Orient hour they were talking about an assistant manager coming in, names mentioned were.
Slade
Jobi
McClean
So who do you want as assistant manager? What has anyone heard? With a DOF, head coach, first team coach is there room in the set up for an assistant as well? Wouldn’t it have been more prudent to find an experienced head coach rather than have to jet in someone else to make up for our HC lack of experience? What do others think?

Suspect it will be an experienced assistant, but not somebody who could threaten Embleton's position.
Would have preferred McAnuff as head coach with an experienced assistant though.

I’d have gone with that SF. However, it does highlight that we seem to be “heavy” on the coaching side right now, and with a lack of income, no clarity on when football will restart with fans in the ground. Can we afford it? Is it the right direction to take right now? I guess we can afford it as the owners must have approved the expenditure. I think it’s just to cover Ling and Embleton from blame or failure.

I could understand this number of coaches if the strategy is to promote youth/buy promising youngsters and work on developing them, but that's clearly not the case. With our current squad composition it's clearly overkill.
Would prefer we invested more in analytics than coaching if we're going to pump money into off the field activities. I've asked questions about our use/future use of analytics pretty much every time that a podcast has requested questions for a club staff member and it's never been asked, which is very backward of us.

Aaron McLean - no way.
Left us 17 years ago to become a 'journeyman' around the leagues; and as far as I am aware, has very little coaching/no managerial experience. I thought during the broadcast, why the hell is his name in the mix?
Jobi - I think his priority will be getting into broadcasting. I'm not convinced of this apparent 'awe' that he is held in by the team - judging by last season's results whilst he was sidelined.
Slade - of the three candidates, got to be the best choice. Years of experience; has ammassed a knowledge of players who could do a job for us and would be an instant replacement for Head Coach; if Ross Embleton has another wobbly and decides he doesn't want the lead role any more.
That said, do we seriously need yet another bloke helping to run the show? What are Martin Ling, Jobi McAnuff and Dean Brill contributing to the party exactly?

Surely what limited budget that is available would be better utilised on strengthening the playing side rather than bringing in another assistant to aid RE & company?

They should sign Damian Matthew as assistant manager
I recruited him on football manager and we got to the Championship in three seasons

If we needed an assistant manager surely Jobi would get the job as he's already on the pay roll

Think I’d rather the budget was spent on a new CM if Cisse isn’t joining, or a replacement for Sotiriou if he goes.

He was never made assistant, just a first team coach.

If they insist on Ross being head coach, and let’s face it, he ain’t going anywhere before the start of next season, I think bringing in an experienced number 2 is a great idea.
Not holding out much hope though, will probably be another mate of Ling who’s spent 5 minutes coaching somewhere else.

What about Ling himself? 2 birds with one stone. Experienced manager, can quietly retire the DoF role, everyone’s a winner.

Glad it’s been noticed. But we need experience and I’ve got the same amount of football league caps as Ross.

Be fair, he spent 12 months helping out with Tottenhams U13 side. It's not as if he just walked into the assistant managers job at Swindon under Lingy.

It would be difficult to get an experienced ass. manager in the building
The unlucky man would have to kowtow to Ling, because its probably been noticed, anyone who dares to have a different opinion from Ling, is out on their arse
Remember Fletcher & Webb, for example?
