I wonder what would happen to the leagues in general if half a dozen or so no longer exist for next season. Potentially we have 2 so far in Wigan and Macclesfield

Wigan have been punching above their weight for a long time. As a club, they're really no bigger than Oldham, Bury, Rochdale.

One of the ironies of clubs turning back to their fanbases to sustain them through this period is that those with larger, more loyal fanbases are likely to get through it somewhat better. The sugar-daddy model doesn't work so well when Daddy doesn't get to play his real-life FIFA game, so doesn't feel like throwing his money at it any more.

Blimey! I didn’t even know Whelan had sold the club a couple of years back, nor about the 2nd ownership change recently.

Will their point deduction apply to this season or the next? I'm guessing this as the championship is still going, so that puts them bottom.

Definitely part of the problem. Always regarded as essentially a 'rugby town', their 'True' fan-base is small, maybe not much bigger than us.

It's situational. If they finish outside the relegation places then it applies this season. If they finish in the relegation places it applies next season.

That’s right (or at least that’s what I read on the BBC) and I think that’s just plain spiteful.

If you’re gonna take points (the rights and wrongs of which have been done to death before on the threads) then take them NOW and be done with it.

Yep - was the BBC article where I saw it too (can't claimed to have known this beforehand).

I'm on the fence as far as when the punishment should apply. If you had teams who were already in the relegation zone then the deduction in the current season isn't much of a punishment as they'd potentially still go down anyway. So makes sense to apply it the following season in those cases. But that doesn't apply to Wigan though as they are lower mid table. If they deduct the points now they will be in the relegation places but still have a small chance of survival as they'd be 5 points from safety with 6 games left so deducting now would seem to be the obvious solution as it would still provide some jeopardy.

be interested to know does the club choose a date to go into administration or is it thrust upon them by a creditor insisting on a debt being called in.

if the former then the above standpoint makes sense if the latter then it malicious.

Thought provoking stuff, with little chance of chasing down any parties IF wrong going was present.

Apparently it's down to some dodgy betting about them getting relegated. There's no evidence that the new owner even exists. If it's proven he doesn't surely the fit and proper test must be redrawn.

I did hear that which is proper weird and strange. Looking at the admin I was thinking I can't see how they will get any return on their investment by the breakup and sell of the component parts. Now you've thrown in the bet to be relegated angle, they don't need one as the sums they've probably gambled far outweigh the investment made previously.

A sad day for Wigan, its fans and football in general.

Oh wow, look at this. This is a real and proper scandal. There is a few replies down a video of Rick Parry confirming the bet.

Reading that earlier it's quite incredible just how rotten it appears to be. Clearly nothing been learnt by the EFL in the years since our Beelzebub troubles. An organisation not fit for purpose.

Makes you wonder how rife corruption is within football and if so how it's gone unchecked for so long.
