Well they are spending tax payers money so I assume they will consider price. But why can’t we build the things in the UK?
Things like Apple phones may well be made in China but Apple will provide the specification ensuring standards are high and I dare say Quality Control strict. If these ventilators are crap it’s probably more to do with us not providing a sufficient specification.

It wasn’t a matter of price, it was a matter of trying to get hold of anything that might do the job. Buying portable units designed for Chinese ambulances to work in a British hospital stinks of desperation.
And as for not buying Chinese goods, good luck with that. Virtually all consumer goods are made in the Far East these days - China, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia dominate the production business. Cheap labour allied to Chinese money is always going to win out.
SRAM are an American bicycle component company. They recently moved production of their transmission systems from one factory to another. The original factory, left with no products to make, has now started their own design range and is undercutting SRAM at half the price. That’s how it works now. If people have unrealistically low expectations of the cost of something then the Chinese domination will continue. You can buy a Chinese toaster or kettle for around £10. That’s insane. It might be basic but a UK-made one would be 5 or 6 times the price. Guess which one the public are going to buy?
