Anyone On Here Ever Won Big ( Or Quite Big )?
BIGRON announced that he is hoping to win on tonight's Lottery, to boost his pension. So that got me wondering. About 19 years ago I won a brand new Peugeot 206 through a works raffle. Unfortunately I had just bought a Renault Laguna, so a gave it to my Mrs ( we divorced a few years later ). So it did very little to enhance my life. Tell us about yours ( I can then run off some begging letters )!

Once shared the Jackpot at Wimbledon dogs - 2 tickets shared a prize pot of just under £1,100 - this was around 1989 or so - and me and a pal had one of the tix, so our share paid for our night in the restaurant (was it the Diamond Room at Wimbledon?) with our girls, limo home etc and then some.

Backed Denmark at 100/1 when they won the Euros.
Given it back many times over since.
Don’t do the lottery - not since they doubled the unit stake (greedy fannies).

The only thing I've ever won was a ladies cosmetics set. I was about 6 years old, and it was in the school raffle. They called my name out in assembly, and I can still remember the burning shame as I had to walk up to the front to collect my prize while the rest of the school roared with laughter.
It's good that I never let it traumatise me.

Re: Anyone On Here Ever Won Big ( Or Quite Big )?
I virtually never gamble, so winning £100 on roulette at a casino in Sheffield seemed pretty big at the time. It was all because I had a sure-fire system.
Which never worked again.
p.s. I've seen James Bond films, so after my huge win, I slid a chip over to the croupier, who slid it back with a look of absolute disdain. Not allowed, apparently.

Re: Anyone On Here Ever Won Big ( Or Quite Big )?
In 1983, I won the raffle at Cradley Heath Speedway. The prize was having your photo taken with any one of the riders. Fortunately, my Sister was with me and I gave her the ticket; as she fancied one of the Hackney team.
I also won a Terry's orange in the pub raffle the other month. I gave it to one of the old girls as I don't eat chocolate.
Other than that I've never gambled on horses, the lottery, etc. I wouldn't know how to place a bet; or fill in a lottery ticket; if my life depended upon it. The simple reason is I have never wanted to win even a copper coin. The Wife is the same; we've just always been happy with what we've got.

I won £548 on a Lucky 15, 20p each way. All four won, all were names which my grandchildren have. Lilly, Jack and Isla!

Re: Anyone On Here Ever Won Big ( Or Quite Big )?
Couldn't get any shares in one of the share sell-offs in the 80's (British Gas, BT or TSB or some such company) so bought £200 worth of shares in Avis the car hire company which was going public then. 18 months later they decided to go private again and bought the £200 shares back for £600. Apart from our houses that's the most I've ever "won" on any gamble or game. I stuck the money in the building society savings account and probably frittered it away on wine, a woman (Mrs NES) and sport.

Re: Anyone On Here Ever Won Big ( Or Quite Big )?
Yesterday, while bored (I know, don't gamble through boredom) I bought a National Lottery ticket for the first time in years. I do the Euromillions now and again, but stopped doing the NL when they doubled the price and I realised I was spending quite a bit each week on it.
Anyway, last night I won a little prize - matched 3 balls. Apparently it was a "roll-down" week - the main jackpot hadn't been won for ages and the rules meant it had to be spread out among all the other prizes, so instead of £10 I got £126. This has reduced my lifetime losses on the National Lottery by a wee bit.

Re: Anyone On Here Ever Won Big ( Or Quite Big )?
In 1972 there was a guy in our street who had a cracking toy castle with turrets ramparts, working drawbridge etc. It's was on a board about 4ft x 3ft.
He was a few years older than me and had moved on from castles and toy soldiers and into Suzi Quatro and had annoyingly begun singing Devil Gate Drive and 48 Crash almost all of the time and talked about what he would do to that Suzi Quatro if he had a chance. Rumour was he had a poster of her on his bedroom wall and that he had fallen out of bed one morning and cracked his pyjamas. Me and my mates thought he was a jerk.
Anyway the school was doing a fundraiser and he put his castle up for raffle. I think the tickets were 5p or something. I will never forget the moment when the castle was brought into our class after the raffle had been drawn. I just knew I had won it and I had.
The castle was to become the home of my Highland Light Infantry soldiers and for a time they were the sole occupants but later had to share it with the British 8th Army and some Russians and I suspect they were pleased about that as they were welcome reinforcements in repelling constant attacks from the Afrika Korps.

Are you talking Airfix soldiers? I was thinking of these just the other day. Even had a look on ebay, to bring back memories of the various armies.Max B Gold wrote: ↑Thu Apr 30, 2020 11:37 am The castle was to become the home of my Highland Light Infantry soldiers and for a time they were the sole occupants but later had to share it with the British 8th Army and some Russians and I suspect they were pleased about that as they were welcome reinforcements in repelling constant attacks from the Afrika Korps.
Even in 2 inch high plastic, the Germans always had the better style of uniforms.

I remember staring to paint mine - green helmet and sand coloured uniform for the 8th Army - but got bored after doing about a dozen. Used to have a couple of those spring powered howitzers and fired matches from them to decimate the Afrika Korps.NuneatonO's wrote: ↑Thu Apr 30, 2020 1:01 pmAre you talking Airfix soldiers? Hehe. When I was about 14 I gave them all away to my young cousin to continue the war.
At that age I had gone the way of the guy who raffled the castle (his name was John and his dad became the local Labour councillor. He's dead now) and had become a lover not a fighter

Re: Anyone On Here Ever Won Big ( Or Quite Big )?
I won 2,500 about 14 years ago on a Fantasy football league. It was the year, I think Reading won the Championship and Doyle was on fire. If I can remember it was the 2005-6 season. You had to pick a team from 8 categories and I managed to pick all the teams that came out on top. You got points for wins, goals, hattricks, clean sheets etc.
I spent the money on a scooter. I still have it the garage but I never got a full licence for it.

Re: Anyone On Here Ever Won Big ( Or Quite Big )?
I once got a particularly bad case of piles which required an operation. After the surgery the doc said it was actually an anal fistula which was covered as a serious illness on my health life policy. Got a cheque for 20,000 euros a month later, which was a result not to be sniffed at.
