What a record
During lockdown I have occupied my time by reading some of my 200 or so boxing books, but also re read tony McDonald’s book on orients greatest team and was reminded of the remarkable record shared by the two greats Stan charlton and Sid bishop , that in almost 700 games between them neither were booked. All the more remarkable when one takes into account these were two fierce tackling defenders.

Ah Stan, the sliding tackle, Charlton. What a player, as was Sid Bishop.Redcard wrote: ↑Mon Apr 27, 2020 10:59 am During lockdown I have occupied my time by reading some of my 200 or so boxing books, but also re read tony McDonald’s book on orients greatest team and was reminded of the remarkable record shared by the two greats Stan charlton and Sid bishop , that in almost 700 games between them neither were booked. Re: What a record
Yes Stan Charlton and centre half Sid Bishop were brilliant defenders for Leyton Orient and both were gentlemen players who never resorted to the bad foul tackles that some defenders inflicted on forwards in those long off times ago.Redline wrote: ↑Mon Apr 27, 2020 6:04 pmAh Stan, the sliding tackle, Charlton. I was around 12 years old when I first started watching Orient , it was the great promotion to Division One season. Pitches were so muddy in those days come around December till the end of the season. Funny thing I seem to recall about Stan's sliding tackle is that he was so precise in the way he did it, tackle was as clean as a whistle, never seemed to foul the player and after he won the bal, it seemed like it was held tight wedged between his two feet. Only player i ever saw get the better of Stan was the brilliant Preston North End left winger Peter Thompson, what a fantastic winger he was. Bill Shankly signed him to join Liverpool where he became a Liverpool Legend ! As to Sid Bishop, well those fortunate few who were lucky to see him play at his peak form, can remember him as perhaps the best ever Leyton Orient centre half, I cannot say more than that !

Re: What a record
I was only a kid when I watched him, but from what I can recall from those long ago time's, he was an excellent central defender who really stood out as a very special player ! Different times so an impossible thing to compare like for like to the other excellent players you mentioned. From what I remember, he was a dominant defender who seemed to win most every tackle and header, Sid also had excellent positional play and always seemed to be in the right place at the right time. I will also add Paul Beesley to the list of some of the best Centre Halves that I have seen play for Leyton Orient.

Re: What a record
Syd, Beasley was a very good centre half, and I will add Paul went to that list, but Bishop was something else.
In our promotion year to the top flight I believe it was 23 games before a centre forward he was marking scored against us.

Different era for judging offences. These days a mistimed tackle gets a yellow - them days you could tackle from behind without fear. Read an article about the Leeds Chelsea FA cup final replay a couple of days ago. Not a single player booked, but it was watched a couple of years back by a panel of ref's who judged that there would have been 6 reds in the modern game.

It was re-refereed again a couple of weeks ago by Michael Oliver. 11 reds (although two for Mc Creadie) and 17 yellows.LittleMate wrote: ↑Thu Apr 30, 2020 12:52 pm Different era for judging offences.
