My two sons organized an electronic Quiz in our three households, which resulted in some eerrr unusual answers. The two girls, one a teacher the other into 3rd year university.
Question, name the nine countries sharing land border with Germany, one girl said China and Madrid
Question A well known Country and Western singer has just died name him. Jerry Springer? one of them said.
Question Name a Famous long running European Train, Answer came back, Thomas the Tank engine, although she did know the surname of Engineer.
Can't wait till Thursday again, How do the Universities churn out these well educated students

A lot of them probably go on to work as journalists or reporters, most of them are thick as well.

Not sure how knowledge of country and western singers equates to intelligence. Apart from Johnny Cash I couldn’t name a single one, dead or alive.

The Thomas The Tank engine answer was obviously a joke.

Admittedly the Germany border answers were pretty silly.

There’s nothing worse than doing quizzes with bores who give it “how could you be so stupid” act whenever somebody gets something wrong. Some people just aren’t that good when put on the spot. Overall it says more about your own insecurities than anybody else’s faculties that you use a quiz, which is supposed to be fun, to chastise other people’s intelligence.

I'm generally good at quizzes we've been doing one between about 8 households and me an the missus have won it for the last month, so I generally run quizzes rather than do them. I seem to have the type of brain that retains lots of useless information however I have minimal academic qualifications (O level in Maths & Economics) as i tend to crumble in exams. So I just look at it that people have different types of intelligence.

I don't disagree that people have different types of intelligence. I have a very low IQ based on the type of tests that they use. What I don't understand is why people with virtually no general knowledge apply to go on general knowledge quizzes on TV

2 trust me the tank engine was not a joke, an answer she nearly gave was the C2C line, she had never heard of The Orient Express or Orient Line for that matter
The girl didn't know what a hay loft was, apart from that why you trying to pick an argument, Quiz was not my idea, the
boys have been organizing them with friends as well, you can join in if you want, but your just a plain old spoil sport

Ps she didn't know what or where were the Rainbow Mountains in Peru, She's studying for a Masters in Geology

Picking up on the ‘Pointless’ comment, caught one a few weeks ago which was naming countries that are in the Commonwealth, answers offered included France and Ukraine. Alexander Armstrong did his best not to laugh!

If you look at a lot of the the applications for TV quizzes they ask you what your Knowledge is like in specific subjects. If they only put people who were good at quizzes they'd be giving a way a fortune so they put a few of the intellectually challenged in their for balance.

General knowledge is something acquired over time, not taught at university. University is for specialising in a subject

Can't agree. Why are 20 somethings or less on the real University Challenge so good across a wide range of obscure subjects.

I have studied a lot of subjects ( I have a weird range of "A" Levels ), believe me, some subjects are a lot more intellectually challenging than other subjects.

I believe it is acquired over time along with having a mind that is open and eager to pickup knowledge, closed minds will not learn, you can see those people and recognize them in normal conversation.
I picked up my open mind as a kid, my father coming home from work with 3 daily papers, The Evening News, Daily Mail, and the old Daily Sketch, used to read cover to cover.
Then went to work at Times Newspaper doing same also The Guardian printed in same building, nipping over to Express building and Telegraph. Learnt so much gave me an insatiable thirst for knowledge. most of it useless but never mind.

It was merely posited as a suggestion. It was something to consider. A closed minded person could never do that.

The brain works on blood flow & electircal impulse .

It can be defined by someone who had a partial brain
Heamorage that doctors found in a patient which haf killed certain functions .
They monitered the kid & wer3 amazed to find that with training the rain found a new path to that sector of the brain .

An open mind would just mean you are dead.
