planting runner bean seeds in pots never worked for me, the best way to start them off
is to fill a clear plastic bag with dampened down compost, put the amount of
beans you need plus a couple extra ones in tie the top and put it on your window sill,
in no time they will start germinating then plant them in pots until time to plant out.
guaranteed to work.

Cheers Percy (going to try this by the way). Any more tips on propagation etc please post them, gardening is new to me but keeping me sane.

My preferred growing method too. Always good and generally cheaper.

all my beans 20 of them have rooted, have potted them up for transplanting in may.
my cucumbers are also coming up as well, so are my tomato seeds.
if you have a garden come on get out there and dig a patch
or even on a balcony you can grow lots of veg in containers.
after all there is not much else to do.

What about growing avocados fella?

Sowed some seeds in my veg trugs yesterday. Mainly salad leaves and beetroot. Still a bit early for outdoor tomatoes, but as it may prove difficult to get hold of the usual plugs I usually use, may have to fall back on indoor seed sowing for them too. Need to get some courgette and brassica seeds soon too.

They are pretty easy to grow, but need netting when it gets nearer to harvest time if you don’t want every fruit scoffed by birds and animals. Badgers and squirrels both love ‘em.

Peppers grow well on a window cill or in a conservatory.

my tomato seeds and ridge cucumber seeds are sprouting well
on my window ledge.
got a free packet of rocket seeds so will be planting them up now they are very easy to grow
will grow them in an old washing up bowl a few at a time rather than put them into the ground.
never had much luck with beetroot even though its one of my favourite salad foods.

Anyone had any success with herbs?
Thyme and thyme again they die. Would love to have endless bushes to dabble with like that Jamie bloke on the telly.

Grew a massive marijuana plant in my garden once, never budded though. Trying Broad beans, courgettes and kale this year.

Thyme, sage, mint, basil, chives and curly parsley are fine for me, but for some reason rosemary is my nemesis. A dead plant every winter. I don’t bother much with coriander or flat leaf parsley: blink and it goes all woody & runs to seed.

Do you have them inside or outside slacker?

All outside in pots/containers, but it is a south facing garden so they get plenty of sun. As long as they don’t dry out (or get waterlogged) they demand little attention through the summer, with the perennials getting a good haircut in the autumn.

Luckily i've moved somewhere with a very well established garden but the problem is i don't know whats a flower, or a herb, or a veg, or a weed.

It's been quite cool discovering different things every day. Got two absolutely HUGE thyme and rosemary bushes. Found some chives sprouting through a crack in the step and what i think is rhubarb down the end. Would love to plant and grow more.

More rhubarb? It’s great, (I stew it with sugar and ginger and use it cold on top of my oats, nuts, seed and almond milk “overnight” muesli mix that I make in batches to last a few days). You’ll struggle to eat what one big plant provides.

When I was a kid there were no fancy overnight muesli, although there were rumours that southern softies were eating it.

We ate our rhubarb raw with a bag of sugar to dip it in.

There used to be huge fields of rhubarb around the nearby village but alas no more.
