War Time Spirit

Post by Clive Evans »

I have seen a lot of this spouted on the TV by pundits. Not seen a lot of it myself. I am 72 and live alone and have a serious heart condition. Nearly all my relatives are a lot older; 2 brothers 7 & 10 years older. I am quite well known locally as I trudge the streets with my dog, that is a very unusual breed. Nobody has come near my house to check if I am still alive. I have a good friend who lives nearby and she rings at least once a day and is very helpful. But my neighbours don't know this. Everybody seems to be out panic buying. The government seems to be giving us a mealy mouthed lead. Saying we should all look out for each other. But the Tories have preached the Gospel of " Look After Number One " for the past 40 years.
In fact I am OK I have made some swift purchases of essentials in the past couple of weeks and got an online order with Morrisons due Wednesday. Will sleep a bit easier if that arrives all OK. It wont let me place an order for the week after next. That's a bit worrying. Anyone seen a different attitude. Any of our younger readers, have you done anything public spirited?

Ah, the wartime spirit. Spivs profiteering and criminals taking advantage of the blackout to commit crimes. The good old days.

I've had a word with Merkel. She's kindly agreed to send the Luftwaffe over and bomb the hell out of the worst affected Coronavirus areas. This will undoubtedly enhance the wartime spirit and may be be a more effective method of controlling the outbreak.

We had an order come Saturday and everything was there if that's any consolation.

When the ladies of the night start offering a
Knee trembler for half a shilling during an air raid
I may decide to partake in some war time spirit .

People are selfish and stupid. I wasn't around in the war but assume it's not much different and hindsight has blurred all the sh*t stuff that no doubt happened in war time.

Hopefully when this becomes the new norm, people start being more sensible and less selfish.

This morning I emailed the street email list offering up shopping, postage, etc...services. Sort of felt obliged as we are the youngest couple on the street and the average age is about 80.

I rang my elderly neighbour to see she I could get her some essentials. 40 Fags and 4 bottles of white wine (not French) was the answer.

Just got back from work and popped into the chipshop. While I was waiting for my order I held the door open for the same guy twice while he ignored me (not that I was really that surprised) and probably thought I was the doorman.Even in my cycling gear.So I thought I try a test but the second bloke did actually notice I was there.😅

That's an average of 10 fags per bottle! She really should try and silk cut down.

I'm nearly 63 but reasonably healthy. I've dropped a note through the letterboxes of around a dozen of my nearest neighbours offering help if they need it or just a chat on the phone if isolated. I'm happily retired so have some spare time and it seemed the least I could do. All dependent on my own continuing good health, of course.

Yeah terrible days. Street crime, gang murders, wanton knifings etc. Today is a paradise in comparison.

Sounds like recent.😅

I was thinking about this and my most enjoyable times were the 60s/70s/80s/90s and 00s.I didn't enjoy the last decade one bit.

I am in Grays. I am fine and coping well. But despite all the happy clappy stories Nobody has asked if all is well. I am quite mobile so that helps a lot. I am sure that there are people who are/could be in a much worse situation. I know a fair bit about biological science, that helps.

Glad your ok & coping, WSS. You can always use this place (and other social media outlets if you can stand them) when you need a bit of virtual interaction, sound off, or give out a call for help. Same applies to others, of course.

You're not Thor in disguise are ya ?.................................I spent the first 6 years of my working life in Chemical Analysis Laboratories. I don't go in for tin pot theories that sound exciting. I tend to like boring facts. As Oscar Wilde once said "The truth is rarely pure and never simple".
