Such a sad Story

So sad. Such a loss of a young athlete and the pilot

Very sad story on many fronts.

I'd guess that the pilot expected to be flying VFR, but delays on the day pushed the journey later and later and he felt he couldn't back out - but add that to the clapped out plane and the dubious involvement of unlicensed agents in the arrangement of the transportation, and no-one comes out of this looking very good. It's an interesting but sad insight into what happens behind the scenes after the publicity roadshow has left town.
