Nothing to do with Coronavirus.

It was down to unmanageable levels of debt and lack of funding from the greedy speculative owners who bought it recently for £2.8m and then expected the taxpayer to fund it. Socialism for the rich.

Correct. Cynical move by Branson, but it was always about acquiring Flybe's slots, particularly at Heathrow. Watch out for Virgin Connect rolling out soon to occupy the profitable routes and having dodged all the debt to Flybe's suppliers.

I'm glad the government did not invest our money in this. Virgin were definitely opportunistic when investing in Flybe.

I can understand why the government provided some cash previously, as Flybe were providing some key connections to regional airports. This will hit places like Belfast, Exeter and the Channel Islands hard.

I just cannot understand why the Taxpayers Alliance weren't all over this and opposing it. I suppose they just never noticed it.

Flybe used Southend Airport for short haul destinations as well. I think the other major carrier from Southend is Easyjet.
Probably be a sizeable impact on employment in the area.

I can't stand Branson. He tries to appear as a benign easy going man of the people but in reality he's a cynical hard-bitten businessman, IMO. I still recall when he sued the NHS and got a large payout from them when he failed to win an NHS sell-off contract. I expect that money could have been spent rather better within the NHS.

Think Delta have the biggest stake in Virgin Atlantic these days, followed by KLM/Air France. Branson only has about a 20% stake these days. But as has been noted, be interesting to see what Flybe airports/routes get rebranded - airports like Exeter & Soton will be dead if none are.

Always enjoy your injections of common sense and hard facts - thanks - but I still can't stand Branson ;)

They clearly acted improperly, hence the settlement.

Seems like you have a problem with him for another agenda, which is clearly irrational, unless you have had personal dealings with him.

Failing that, you just hate virgins.
