Extinction Rebellion

Post by Orient Punxx »

Totally shocked by my family’s view that Extinction Rebellion should be seen in the same light as “The Suffragettes” and “The Civil Rights Movement” in as much as affecting change.

In my own opinion I see them negatively affecting debate and undermining the scientific argument.

Would be interesting in hearing opinion......

This thread will be fun.

I do find it interesting, in all facets of life, people only see the short term inconvenience things like extinction rebellion cause and are unable to see the bigger, longer term picture.

Something needs to be done and you aren’t gonna get anyone to listen by whispering. Whilst I don’t agree with everything they do, I think they are rightly focusing a light on important issues and very well may be seen as historical change makes in the future.

Do you think the suffragettes or Martin Luther King or Malcolm X or literally anyone who has tried to bring about change ever was supported by the majority at the time?

Are there many examples of peaceful mass protest working in this country in recent times?

Remember Lumley and Gurkhas managed to win some concessions. Maybe the lorry driver/fuel shortage thing too

They’ll be heroes in years to come and everyone will be saying how they supported them.

So you reckon these guys need to up the ante with a bit of direct violence? Fair play.

Iraq War 2 march 1M people nothing changed
Anti - Brexit March 1M people nothing changed

Poll tax march, plenty changed.

I don't advocate violence, but marching without consequence achieves nothing.

They have something to say, no doubt about that.

However as long as it's delivered in a militant, aggressive, way no one will listen

There was a program earlier this week on XR and I must admit i was surprised how switched on and connected they really are as a movement.

Wonder what they feel about birth control, not a subject I’ve heard discussed around it, but it strikes me that if the population of Planet Earth were (say) half what it is now or less, then that would have an enormous impact on the sustainability of the planet.

Sorry to disappoint you but we have the population we do and the planet is going to hell in a handcart. It's the logic of the economic system that is causing the degredation of the earth.

Good point, we could cull half the people on the planet rather than change our ways.

Why do that ?

Its better to make money having a 5 or 6 year world war.

Lets create a world of hate by splitting peoples views everywhere

Problem is that not many have listened when it's been discussed in a reasoned manner. I don't blame them for trying to raise the ante a little.

That would be the scientific argument between the vast majority of scientists and Donald Trump then?
