Well and truly stitched up by a philistine non-appreciator of the great William Shakespeare.

Can see how that tweet was taken badly. Probably should have put a bit more thought into it before pressing send.
An apology would have sufficed. Didn’t really need to lose his job.

Yep. Feel sure his bosses wanted a pretext. It was an error of judgement on his part, however.

No. He's obviously not a stupid man.

This is ridiculous
Stewart quoted a few lines from Measure for Measure in an exchange with a white person in 2018
This week Labour Activist and all-round arse arch Martin Shapland (a black man who continually tweets his own racist bile) dug the old tweet up and used it to accuse Stewart of racism because he used the word 'ape'. The original tweet was not sent or directed at Shapland - but he managed to stir up a sh*t storm and Stewart had to go.
Shapland only three days ago likened Sajid Javid to Gollum on his twitter feed, is policy director for the Institute of Civil Engineers and his social media is filled with inverted racist rhetoric. Not surprisingly he isn't at work today.
It seems obvious to me that the wrong person has been sacked. Stewart is known to be a very enthusiastic champion of ethnic minorities - and getting sacked for quoting Shakespeare to another white person is frankly idiotic

The gollum thing was quite funny, I thought.

You just cannot say, write or quote anything anymore just because some arsewipe might take offence to it. It is Political
Correctness gone mad.

Another example of everything thats wrong with this country today. ITV should be ashamed that they did not give support to Alastair Stewart a broadcaster, newsreader who has given over forty years service. They should have refused his resignation and stood by him.

Didn't know any of that when I posted earlier. I now pronounce him innocent.
Let that be a lesson to me about going off all half cocked and posting in complete ignorance.

Shapland responded to reports on Thursday to explain that the issue went further than just one Shakespeare quote tweeted in isolation. In a statement, he said: “In so far as Mr Stewart caused hurt and upset, intentionally or otherwise, in an exchange earlier this month, there is a wider context. There was not a single post as has been widely reported, but several posts written by Mr Stewart, which have all now been deleted.

Didn't know that either. I now condemn him as guilty as hell.
I only wish I'd stuck with my original completely uninformed gut reaction. That way there would be no need to zig zag back and forth as new evidence is presented. I've always said one should change their opinion when new evidence comes to light.
In my defence he does seem a bit mild mannered to be getting involved in twatter spatz. But the media makes fools of us all. Just ask Gilso.

I for one am glad he has gone. Couldn't stand the bloke. Nothing to do with the current situ. Just didn't like his way of presentation and making things sound like they were the best thing that could happen, i.e. when announcing the pifling sentence of guilty ones that cause really bad car accidents.

Maltby's comments fail to address the fact that Martin Shapland is a racist, or that he continually looks to provoke people on Twitter.
The situation was originated in Shapland's accusation that Stewart was racist for using 'ape' in a Shakespearian quote sent two years ago to another white person. Shapland knew he was being antagonistic - and if Stewart did bite back it must be seen at least in part as exasperation at the ignorance of English literature displayed when Shapland levelled his unfair accusation.
Shapland to me represents all that is bad about social media. Yes, people should be called out for making inappropriate comments. But looking for (or taking offence) when it is clearly not meant seems like a return to mob rule.
