RIP, Martin.

I used to deliver milk to him when he lived in Stoneleigh Gardens, Clayhall in the late 60's.

And I was in North Middlesex Hospital for my first brush with cancer when he got transferred to Tottenham and remember hearing the roar through the open window from White Hart Lane, when he scored after about 15mins on his debut for Spurs.

Very sad news, worked for combined motor plan when I worked for a branch of the same firm. Always had time for everyone, always carried a signed photo of him scoring in the world Cup final that he'd take out of his boot and give people for free. Wonderful player may he rest in peace. Altzheimers is a terrible thing for anyone to suffer.

Used to see him out and about in Shenfield and Brentwood when I lived there a few years ago. RIP Martin.

Sad news, I think it was Sir Alf Ramsey who said he was ahead of his time and he was right. RIP

Really sad news. R.I.P Martin

There is an ongoing concern that many of the old school of footballers who have succumbed to dementia did so because of heading the old heavy balls used in the game at the time.

I know Jeff Astle's family and Frank Copel's (Dundee Utd) both of whom passed away suffering from dementia shared that concern. As I recall Martin Peters was renowned for his heading ability.

It's an industrial injury and the FA/Clubs should be paying to look after these guys during their illness and supporting their wives and families.

If my memory serves me right Martin was a close friend if the Potter family who own and run Potters holiday centre near Great Yarmouth. I can remember him turning out in goal for the campers versus the staff in a football match. Time for everyone and a gentleman. A true great with a style rarely seen in football.

I was fortunate to see him play for Spurs (scored a goal too) in 1971. Just found it on youtube (see below). So silky. I got to meet him 25 years ago when he did a bit of corporate stuff at West Ham. He was one of a number going up and down the corporate boxes but he gave as much time as we wanted - unlike the others. I was left struck by how humble, how gentlemanly he was. A sad miss.

You've got it with that last sentence. He was a one off style of player. Quite unique for that era. I remember him many times 'ghosting' in from nowhere to score vital goals. Class player.

I just read in the Standard of a story recounted by Tony Carr. Training was going bad and people were not too focused so Peter's got someone to cross the ball to him and from the edge of the box he would volley it on to the bar. Cross comes in and bang he hits the bar, do it again they say as that was luck, cross comes in and bang he hits the bar. Now they're like no way can you do it a third time. The cross duly comes in and bang he hits the bar.

There crosses, three volleys outside the box and each time he hits the bar.

Now that is skill and some brilliance.

Great to see that you tube video Spurs v Forest. I was actually at that game in the Park Lane End.
