Dying in debt

A guy I know has unfortunately been diagnosed as terminally ill ☹ , his wife doesn't know it but he's heavily in debt , when he passes does his wife inherit the debts or do they die with him ? the debts are bank loans and store cards , i can't see anything on line to verify this and he's worried about leaving his wife in the lurch .
