Should Charity Begin At Home

Post by Lucky7 »

I’m in Germany at the moment Frankfurt to be precise a few of the locals I spoke to at lunch today where telling me that Germany has roughly 2000 food banks albeit the German population is higher than ours
They blame a falling euro and a weak German Government but also each one of them was miffed with how much money is given to other countries re poverty etc
Do the UK also give to much to overseas?

Personally I think it’s great our government and people give to overseas countries etc though I am always concerned on how much goes on admin rather than direct to the cause

What do other boarders think?

I may be wrong and I don't know the origins of the saying but I've always thought it meant be nice to your family and those around you and take that generous spirit into society as you meet and interact with other people.

Not sure when it was turned around and used as a mission statement for selfish greedy uncaring people.

Can anyone else put a date on it?

Sir Thomas Browne was the first to put the expression into print in the form we now use, in Religio Medici, 1642: Charity begins at home, is the voice of the world: yet is every man his greatest enemy.

Well that was a lucky guess.

Why give the aid money to people in this country, they are not going to buy weapons from BAE Systems.
