Boris Johnson creates new tax
UK prime minister Boris Johnson has followed France’s footsteps by pushing ahead with a digital services tax that is likely to sting a range of US-based tech giants. The move is likely to anger US president Donald Trump, whose administration has slapped $2.4bn (£1.85bn) worth of tariffs on French exports, in retaliation for the country imposing a 3% tax imposed on revenue of digital services that happen within France.

Is he going to talk more about it on the Andrew Neill show?

Re: Boris Johnson made a huge move that will anger Trump
My first reaction is that anything that angers Trump is probably a very good thing.
My second reaction is that we have to look at this sort of Revenue (as opposed to profit based) tax on the new economy. Profits are so easily shifted around and manipulated, so a tax on Revenue looks, to me, to be much more transparent and easily calculated and imposed. Good for France and good for UK (I've not looked, but I'd hope that the Labour manifesto contains a similar proposal).
We have to recognise that as technology changes the world, tax is going to have to come from those companies making the most from it. For example, once all the driving jobs are lost to self-driving technology - and I'm sure they will - taxis, trains, buses, deliveries, freight - then we can't just "lose" all those workers - there will be many fewer jobs, so things like Universal Basic Income, much shorter working week etc etc, will have to be funded from taxation - and that'll have to come from the firms making all the cash from such tech.

Hey whoa there about the driving jobs. People will always need taxis. Not least because they require political education from the drivers.StillSpike wrote: ↑Wed Dec 04, 2019 1:17 pm My first reaction is that anything that angers Trump is probably a very good thing.

Revenue tax is good but there also has to be an International effort through the OECD, EU etc to control the tax evaders.
From January 2020 the EU will be making a start on that very issue. Is it a coincidence that finance capital is campaigning and paying for Brexit along with their stooges in the Tory and Brexit parties? I don't believe it is.

Or we could just restrict access to healthcare for anyone who cannot afford it (as well as decent housing). The resultant die-off will reduce the surplus population. Should save a few bob.

Like all election bribes, this should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Would never work - capitalism needs its proles as workers and consumers to thrive. They would be cutting off their noses to spite their face if they did what you suggest.
Oh wait. They are doing it. FFS! they don't even understand their own system enough to save it.

Re: Boris Johnson made a huge move that will anger Trump
Just watching his press conference here, he is one lying mother tucker. He won't answer most of the questions, just mumble jumble. In all fairness, he can't answer the questions honestly. He said he doesn't know about the viral video mocking Trump, Prince Andrew hosting a breakfast with Trump and playing golf together but he doesn't know him, Johnston said it's not part if the meetings. If this is the leadership the UK is left with, God help the UK.

He's talking about Universal Basic incomes, a much shorter working week, and asking these huge corporations to actually pay some tax.

Not needed in your socialist heaven, all transport will be supplied by the state, buses and trains for the masses instead of imperialistic type taxis for individual passengers!

I've asked around the rank if any of the drivers know what an imperialistic taxi is. None of them do. I can but only conclude it is a figment of your limited imagination.Sid Bishop wrote: ↑Wed Dec 04, 2019 2:56 pm''Hey whoa there about the driving jobs. In the driverless world there will be driverless electric cars, state owned of course, to enable people to make the short journey between the stations, shops etc. There will also be free segways and hover boards and jetpacks for the more adventurous.

As to a limited imagination, well you have no humor at all just one endless lot of moaning and constant whining about how wonderful it would be to live in a Socialist Republic. A mind trapped in a time warp where you daydream of fighting with the International Brigade in the Spanish civil war in the struggle against Franco.
