The step up

Been meaning to do this for a while.
The starting xi that last got us promoted, games played that season, games played the next season, outcome
Garner, 49, 48, released to a league 2 team
Lockwood, 47, 46, sold to a league 1 team
Mackie, 46, 36, released to league 2 team
Zakuani, 50, 0, sold after promotion to prem team
Miller, 41, 31, released to a league one team
Keith, 46, 8, released to a league 2 team
Easton, 42, 33, joined another league 1 team
Simpson, 51, 16, released to a league 2 team
Tudor, 35, 31, released to a league 1 team
Alexander, 49, 45, joined another league 1 team
Ibehre, 27, 16, stayed a further season then joined a league one team

So just one season after being promoted jabo was the only player from the main xi still at three club! With the vast majority of the team being released to weaker teams.

Goes to show the step up between leagues, and why expectations are far too high for the current crop of players.

Of course it was, it got promoted. Adz' point is the one that got us promoted was not broken up and is proving itself to be not up to the job.

It was broken up in so far as the two goalscorers were sold. We lost their goals, work rate, industry everything.

Angol I like a lot. Wilko has improved massively since Angol has been out however, a silly red card cost us in more ways than one.

That team would beat our current cabbages 5-0.

That was League 2 to League 1 though, IMO the step up is a lot bigger than National League to League 2.

Whilst there is obviously an increase in standard, not many promoted teams struggle.

Also ignores synergies and the sum being better than the parts, none of the 2013-2014 side went on to better things bar Odubajo/Jones but when all fit that side played most others off the park. In that sense there was good partnerships in 2005/2006, Mack/Zak, Simpson/Easton, Alexander/Steele were good for each other.

I think expectations in the main are not too high, if anything Kent Teague's expectation of 19-20 points after 13 games is too high. We had 16 after that and he was 'a little' disappointed, he probably will be fuming after 26 games...even 10 points seems a big ask from Fletcher's first 13 games.

Yet somehow the step up came as a surprise to Ross (and presumably Ling)

Lads: the biggest step up made by anyone over the summer was that made by Ross Embleton. And Fletcher is also making a pretty big step up. When advancing the "step up" argument, this should be taken into account far more than it is.

No it's not. Should we have dropped points against Macclesfield, probably not, stevenage nope, Crawley nope, Exeter deserved better, crewe nope, colchester probably not, port vale nope. If we are honest we should have got another 10 points so I'm not surprised Kent was not happy. It's not like they were hard games was it?

That's why I've repeatedly said that Justin would have had us challenging to win this league no doubt about it.

Yup, and there's a reason they ended up at a non league team.

I think that JE overachieved with our team, and with the 2 best players gone the rest of them are not up to the job.

Of the team that got promoted, I only think Happe, and Marv have a future at this level. You could make an argument for JMD, Brophy and Dayton on occasion, but none of them are consistant enough at this level.

A majority of them are good enough to finish mid table in league 2, the jump in quality isn’t that big.

Ling should have been targeting the weak areas of our squad as well as the gaps

Adz point was alot were there for 1 whole season & we finished 20th , They were all cleared out 1 full season after except for jabo.

It was Justin who said ,
These players deserve a crack at league 2 , no one else.
