Swindon proved yesterday that 3-5-2 isn’t negative, you’ve just got to have the players to do it. We do not. We are completely set up for 4-4-2. 4-3-3 worked in spells but angol and Dennis do not track back and our central midfield isn’t good enough to come and cover to help our full backs.
We should also play our best players and leave sentimentality and reputation to one side. We have some brilliant, exciting attacking players, who we either aren’t playing or aren’t playing in their best position. Back to basics please, stop overthinking it Ross.
If you would believe most people on here, we ain’t going down, and we clearly aren’t going up, so let’s look to the future and blood some of the kids.
Sarge deserves a chance. Brill barley had a pre-season and he’s let in some stinkers. Went down injured yesterday as well and the kid has done well when he’s come in.
If Widdowson is fit he plays but Ogie should be considered.
Coulson has looked a yard off the pace. Let’s give him a rest and give a chance to two of our really promising youngsters, see how they play together.
Not a huge fan of Gorman but he’s the closest we have to a box to box midfielder ( I know, I know). He at least shows some aggression and probably deserves a chance for a run in the team, especially when Clay has looked like league two is a yard too fast for him. Send the spurs kid back.
JMD and Brophy on the wings will be up there with the best in this league.
Wilko hasn’t shown anything. Angol is better at holding the ball up and Dennis is clearly better quality all round than Wilko. Them two up top would cause defenders loads of problems.

I’d swap Wright for Marsh
Other than that pretty spot on

Yeah hard to say with Marsh. Bizarre signing as Ross clearly doesn’t fancy him. Didn’t see him play Tuesday so don’t know what he’s like. Wright was poor yesterday but think he’s had a pretty solid start of the season.

I think we need some unpredictability up front - I believe Dennis can bring that in the same way Koroma did last season so good move to get him up top.
Agree with the team selection - as for JMD, what’s he like on the wing? I seem to remember he stared to drift in very central and didn’t take players on when he played there before?

He was playing there yesterday and took on players. He does drift inside but if you just tell Brophy to hug the touchline, I don’t have a problem with that.

A bit ambitious to think that Brophy will ever up with the best in the League when you consider Lloyd Isgrove is in it. JMD is also making a step up, and before yesterday had actually shown very little and was behind Brophy on merit.
Obviously Brophy would have more dribbles and beat more men by far, but what is the point of it if this doesn't convert into goals.
Without seeing the other sides I would think that there would be far more effective wingers out there.
Looking at Dennis highlights his strengths are running at people, cutting inside or late runs into the box. I think he would be wasted up front currently and would end up with his back to goal a lot of the time. Same could be said for Koroma last year, but he was a more skilful player playing at a lower level.
Rather have Harrold in than Wilkinson at this point, he might not last 90 mins but I think his hold up play is better. Also Marsh and Gorman as a combo has more going for it that Clay/Wright, but it is hard to see one of them dropped, let alone 2.

Whilst I agree that Marsh deserves a chance, I didn’t see anything in the Southend Game from him to suggest he would be an improvement on what we already have.

I agree but it has to be tried over a period not just a partial game or a game or 2. The next number off games are going to he a big ask. 5 at the back works if your set up to counter attack and have flying full backs and the legs in midfield. You can quickly go to 3-5-2, 4-3-3 or even just a 4-4-2.

That team just ain’t good enough. We need a new keeper. We need a new right back if Ling is our first choice, and may as well Judd move to another L2 or L1 club where he can get some games and develop. We need 1 or 2 midfielders who can get stuck in and play a bit of football. We need another striker for when Wilkinson ain’t at it, as has been the case for a few games.
Agree with 4 at the back but would go 4-2-3-1, I love the fluidity that brings.
New GK
New RB Marvin Happe Widdowson
New CM New CM
Dennis JMD Brophy
Angol

Dont disagree RedO. But realistically, we aren't getting any players.

We already have Turley, Dayton and McAnuff not on the pitch. Alabi is a disaster.
We need players.

The people in charge obviously feel like we have enough. Lets see what happens in Nov/Dec when we start getting injuries and bans.

Can you imagine when Angol gets a knock and we’re left with just Wilkinson, Harold and Alabi up top.
Or when Gorman picks up his 5th yellow next week and we’re left with just Wright and Clay as central midfielders.
It’s not even just quality, we’re lacking in quantity as well.

We might have only lost by 1 goal yday with that team. Mind, it does give us 12 players

Not a bad team, but Wright has been alright, in general and i just don't think we have good enough CMs to play 3 up front. Ling and Widdowson will be exposed to a good team like Exeter.
It worked second half against Mansfield because we had nothing to lose and for some reason, they shat the bed and sat deep, without attacking us.

What do you mean? We need to play 4-4-2 so both fullbacks have wingers in front of them to give them some protection? Fair point but we've already had to fill up the midfield with the extra man because our midfielders ain't good enough to go 2 v 2 either!
What we're constantly trying to do is field a team which covers up our many weaknesses, rather than going with a formation that plays to our strengths. All of Angol, Brophy, JMD and Dennis are quick, direct, can beat a man and can play intricate football. I'd get all of them into the starting team if possible.
Also, why do people keep calling for Marsh? It's not going to happen. It's clear by now he's been brought in purely to sit on the bench as our 4th CM just in case something happens to one of our other 3.

I agree with you 100% on the point of getting our best players into the team and playing to their strengths. But there's a balance. Unfortunately when we play 3 up i dont think our centre midfielders are good enough to come back and cover, meaning, like crawley, we are susceptible to letting in a lot of goals. In order to get the best out of our attackers, what we really need is central midfielders that they know will be behind them, and if we attack and lose it, they will win the ball back again. At the moment, if we attack with 4/5 players, I'm not confident that the better teams wont just waltz through and score.
Agree as well re Marsh. I've never seen him play but either Ross, Danny and Jobi are completely wrong, or he isn't up to it. Bizarre to bring in a player who's not good enough to start.
