Ratings vs Southend

Sargeant- 8 not much too do but made a FANTASTIC save right near the end
Judd- 5 looked the weak link in defence but made some good runs. Subbed at HT for Sam. Ling any day on this evidence
Ekpiteta- 7 usual solid performance from big Marv.
Happe- 7 ditto Marv
Ogie- 9.5 MOTM by a MILE! made one error all game by my count. If Widdowson is unable to play Saturday, put in Shad.
JMD- 7 played well. Busy as always though faded in the later stages. Subbed off.
Marsh- 8.5 what a player this young man looks. Start him.
Gorman- 7 not a bad performance at all. A few misyakes but certainly not the worst I've seen from him. Good finish for the second goal too.
Dennis- 6.5 made some good runs and took on a few players but was unable to be as effective as he has been in the league. Subbed off.
Harrold- 6.5 worked hard but largely ineffective for the most part.
Alabi- 4.5 did nothing but fall over for the most part but did set up Gorman for a great finish late on.

Subs:

Ling (for Judd)- 7 very solid from Sammy. Hope he continues to prove doubters wrong.
Angol (for Dennis)- 6 came on a bit late to make a real impact but drove at the defence well.
Clay (for JMD)- N/A last minute sub to see the game out.

A bit lucky to win tbh but to see Marsh and Ogie play was a total pleasure. Start them ASAP.

Agree with the above, largely. Ogie was really promising. 9.5 is excessive, more a solid 8.
Judd was disappointing.
Marsh is classy, but is only going to sit in front of the back four, break up play and keep the ball. He will not take players on or create many goals. We have Clay, so who would he replace?

They missed a couple of clear cutters that were played across goal plus the great save from Sarge, pretty much a 1v1.

A great question but, as the cliche goes, a good one to have.

Interesting comments re Ogie. Assume he played left back?

Ross and the coaches obviously don’t think he’s ready as we’ve shoehorned in Happe and Brophy at left back. Would like to see him start Saturday and get his chance if Widdowson is still out.

Can’t believe Judd was only given 45 mins.

I largely agree except that I was a bit disappointed with Marsh who looks ‘tidy’ and happy to sit in front of the back four but we already have Wright and Clay. I thought our midfield looked a bit light weight tonight but Ross has to give these players a chance and some grabbed it more than others.
Ogie was superb and looks a real prospect........Alas, poor James Alabi tried but he won’t start many games on this showing.......Did he clear Harrold’s goal bound header off the line in the 2nd half ??

Was never going to get more just in case after a bit of match practice he starts to look too good. Take him off after a poor 45 makes it easier to play Ling.

Sargeant 7 . Little to do. Good save with his feet and good cross claim 1st half. Great save down low to his left from a Goodship shot in the 2nd half.
Judd 6 . did ok , guess he picked up a knock .sub h/t
Ekpiteta 7. solid game, looked strong, won all his battles.
Happe 7 . good game plus headed goal all be it from 3yds out.
Ogie 8 . MOTM. excellent game. Strong, calm, reliable,Looks ready for the 1st team.
Dennis 5/6. a few touches but below par for me.
Gorman 7 Good game, lots of energy, well taken goal.Silly booking ,which in turn led to a Southend player being red carded.
Marsh 7 Slowish start but did well 2nd half, fitted in well with Gorman in centre mid.
JMD 7 several good deadball crosses and couple of driving runs.came close to scoring.
Harrold 6 put himself about, battled hard. came close with a header that hit the post /Alabi's head?
Alabi 5 He tries, but as yet, not repaying the coaching staff with the faith they have put in him.Must be running out of chances. Had his best spell late on when Ling put him in down the right a few times.
Subs
Ling 7 Came on for Judd. Had a good game. Rarely wasted a pass. Did cause Sargeant a problem when passed back onto Sargeants 'wrong foot' which led to a Southend half chance.
Angol 6 ok .One good 70yd run and a couple of half chances
Clay 6 .Little time . Contained well.

Maybe I was watching a different game but I thought Gorman was awful. Worse than Alabi and that is saying something. The only good thing he did all night was score the goal

I pity the Southend player who was sent off for doing no more than push someone in the chest whilst Gorman got away with a yellow card for a clear and obvious very late stamp on an ankle

What a great supporter. Worse than Alabi! Great to have support like this. Good job we didn't win the game. Your taking the piss.

Another negative so called fan hoping some of our players fail.

Not a fan of his but he was never '"awful". I thought he was busy and showed for the ball. I didn't see the "stamp", what I saw was a one handed push in the chest by Gorman (silly) and a two handed retaliation push on the chest by the Southend player. Could have been two yellows or two reds with a different Ref

Seargent made a couple of excellent saves and caught a difficult cross but southends shooting was so bad he had nothing else to do.
I thought Gorman had a good game particularly the first half.
Alibi , well that’s just Alabi. Wins 50/50 balls with strength when played down the channel but has no luck with the end product.
Marsh showed willing , but my view is that he doesn’t offer much more than we already have. That said he was trying to pick out a telling pass, and it was his first game.
Dennis obviously has skills but I don’t think he is too keen on over exerting himself. Time after time he left ogie with 2 on 1 because he didn’t track back their full backs runs.
Finally, ogie showed just what a terrific player he is going to be. One saving tackle when the southend forward had out paced Happe was premier league. All in all a decent game, decent performance and worth the money just to see ogies contribution.
