Couldn't happen to a nicer fella 😂
That said it is a drastic ruling, where even a player at a club as low as Ware gets punished for betting.
Betting on fixtures involving your own team should be illegal, maybe even involving your league or division, but a blanket ban on players (Pro or semi pro) doing a fiver acca is well overboard

I'd say since the EFL, Isthmian League and countless English clubs (must be around 40% if not more in the top two divisions) are all sponsored by betting companies, the harsh punishments on players getting involved with betting is way beyond hypocritical.

But also, stuff Porter.

Best post PJ has done in a long time
Maybe i'm more old school but I think the penalties were far too soft though.
So good to see Porter done though

Sad to say this but true, a rare sober post from him and a reluctant thumbs up from me for once.

See on the same page that Hartlepool's Joe Jackson also got done for discrimination.

You don't see that in the women's game. It's different for girls.

Heard from elsewhere that Porter did it himself, using his own name so obviously not the brightest chap. But yeah, someone must've narced on him, which is pretty funny too. Hope it was Koroma.

Some of the betting rules for footballers seem harsh but i guess they also potentially know, or are friends with players in other divisions, so I get it.

The blokes a complete wrongun' so not surprising.

Yes would've been poetic justice, unlikely though, How can the guy be such an idiot to use his own name for gambling, the fine is far too lenient in my book.

Does anyone know if football players are allowed to do the Football Pools? - If so, and they HAVE to have a high odds combination bet then I'd have thought that would be a way of they assuaging that particular itch.

Wouldn't they be better off trying to stop the big time gangsters from gambling, the ones who try to 'influence' players to create a certain result, rather than wasting time with the likes of Porter? That's who I'd go after.

What like Ladbrokes and Coral?

I would put severe restrictions on gambling in all its forms and regulate it until the pips squeak.

So if your going to put severe restrictions on all gambling would that mean every other advert wouldn’t be about gambling and betting companies wouldn’t be able to sponsor sports events
They did it with Ciggies
And let’s face it gambling can damage some people’s health

Advertising and sponsorship would be banned. Shops closed and limited to one per town and the internet monitored by GCHQ.

Couldn’t it be monitored from the little shop in Liverpool where Wumble sold his soul to the devil😋

Probably, but let's not be too hard on Wumble I doubt he knew or cared about what he did.

If bromley were 1/4 to win but a couple of players were injured
There opponents at say 5/1 would be a far better bet.

As opposed to man city @ 10/11 to beat Liverpool @11/10 for example

£50 grand on bromleys opponents who win pays out £300k

While the same amount on liverpool or man city would only pay £105 k

We dont know who porter was passing info too
or where it went from there.

473 offences the BBC news are reporting right back to his playing days at Orient

The odds are bigger in non-league due to having less information available publicly.

But it would be difficult to get big money down on the matches as they are so thinly traded. I remember recalling on Betfair last year that there was very little interest at all in some National League matches, including ours.

I wouldn't think the sweet spot for this type of information is in the Non-League but in Leagues One and Two. I would bet there are shady firms who are paying for information (and also people willing to provide it) as the money would be decent relative to wages and it is easier to stake more money.

I do think the FA would not want to pursue this and simply go for the easy targets to show that they are doing something as it might produce quite difficult headlines. But it would be pretty easy to send out some undercover sheikhs with a load of cash... if England managers on millions a year could be had, what is the chances of people on modest wages?

Also reckon quite a few footballers bet using the information they have, but are not stupid enough to do it in their own names. Also would think some are stupid enough not to know the rules properly. Porter betting on the Champions League Final would be an offence under the rules but is hardly bent.
