"The song, by Herb Alpert, and the Tijuana Brass, was first played to lead O`s players onto the field on 10th August 1968 for the Division three clash with Rotherham United. The playing of the tune was the brainchild of then DJ Keith Simpson. After first hearing the tune on his mother-in-law`s LP Going Places, he found the melody bouncy and catchy. He asked boss Jimmy Bloomfield what he thought, since The O`s were looking for a signature tune. Bloomfield thought it ideal and the tune was adopted."

Kaufman (2001) p. 114.

Keith went on to become safety officer for the club and was in charge when I was a steward many moons ago , he wasn't a bad bloke unlike his son who was a swarmy b*stard ☹️

Hang on, I thought the 'song' we walk out to was the theme tune to It's A Knockout?

It was dropped by Barry Hearn for short time in the 90's and replaced with by 'We will rock you' by Queen.

Thiught it was ‘we are the champions’?
Didn’t Bazza want to do ‘Simply the best’ by Tina Turner , but there was an uproar at the thought of ditching Taxi

...it was also because of matching up a hit song like that to a lower league sides entrance onto the pitch was somewhat cringeworthy to say the least. But Hearn, being a naff individual himself, wouldn't have seen that.
