In case you missed it in the most recent Orientear (still available for sale online!), I spoke with LOFC minority investor Jim McCaffrey on what he hopes for in a new majority owner, his ambitions for the Os women's side that his family have taken over, and how he came to be an Orient fan--

Thanks for reading!

Bonkers. Interview of another new American investor about his trip to the American circus that is Wrexham, after we’ve just witnessed an American ref ruin the game on Saturday.

Nicely written article but the games gone. 🥲

Just smacks of tourism to me. You only have to look at Kent to see how that ‘enthusiasm’ doesn’t last when it’s not genuine, life long and ingrained.

As an example, he asks how many people I’ve sent the video of Jamie Donley’s wonderstrike against Manchester City – officially counted as an own goal off the goalkeeper – in the FA Cup fourth round match at Brisbane Road.

Loads, I say.

“Me, too. You want to capture that in a bottle, take that energy around the ground, I mean not just the highs, but also the lows, and take that content and distribute it more broadly,” McCaffrey says. “I want the new owner to be able to take all of that and amplify it – not necessarily change it, but amplify it so more people can have the experience that you and I have had.”

He hasn’t had the same experience we have had.

He's only in it for the money, as per the giveaway statement about the potential to exploit the women's game which he views is being undervalued.

[ Kent always struck me as really enthusiastic. Are you saying he isn't any longer?

Seems like a nice guy, there was a video of him about sponsoring a game recently (city?) that was good too.

Interesting that he also wants to bottle the lows, take them round the ground and distribute them more widely. He actually seems like a perfect fit.

That's only negative from a non capitalistic viewpoint. It is how most Americans view everything.

Anyone involved in football referring to it as content is a massive ick. I struggle to imagine what appetite there'd be for an international audience watching us ahead of any of the other 71 EFL clubs really, other than being in London and having a funny name. The Wrexham doc isn't going to be replicable without having some absurdly famous celebs with a good eye for marketing getting involved, and even then, everything about that club feels a bit plastic now.

He struck me as ridiculously enthusiastic, no question.

Are you saying he istill is? When was the last time he held court on a train back from some far flung away game, or did a lap of honour around the pitch?

It’s not a criticism - it’s just how it is.

I'm sure he is as enthusiastic. He is now a Grandad so no doubt has another interest

I'm sure you're allowed to be enthusiastic about more than 1 thing.

Come on, he was everywhere at one point. All the games, home and away, podcasts, interviews.

It's not a criticism, it's just how it is. You see it time and time again with fans, come in out of nowhere, make a big splash, then quietly disappear after a bit.

Unfortunately this is where the game in England is now. If you want to compete you need £s and very few locals have the interest or money to do it. Any outsider will be more interested in returns etc than a local butcher/car dealer back in the day.

US investors especially see a big gap in potential commercial /TV money returns compared to the actual, so see an opportunity.

Think we’ve already tried the rich guy geezer who wanted the club to generate content by means of a TV show
