BP - profits before climate

Doubt many will be shocked by this.
Again, it makes our attempts to limit climate change a waste of time when the bigger countries of the world don't really seem to care.
Saying that, I have always wondered if we are too far down the road to reverse climate change anyway and I fully suspect there are plenty that don't believe climate change is actually a thing.

Fully suspect? There's millions of idiots who are openly and loudly in denial about it.Fellowo wrote: ↑Wed Feb 26, 2025 6:37 am https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c3374ekd11po

They probably hold the same view as most. If much of the world makes no effort to reach climate change goals, why should they bother. The effort will fracture unless we have multilateral agreements. That was always going to be the case.

100%. If the Chinese, Indians, Russians and now the Americans don’t get on board then everyone else is wasting their time.
Whatever side of the discussion you’re on, surely that’s bloody obvious.

Climate has always changed ffs.
Listening to propaganda will be the downfall of civilisation. There is no evidence for anthropogenic climate change apart from corrupt scientist and governments.
Stop listening to the BBC and do some proper research ffs.

Of course climate has always changed. The question is are humans accelerating it this time around. The answer is yes, unless you get your information from the back of a fag packet.Mickys Bullock wrote: ↑Wed Feb 26, 2025 8:09 am Climate has always changed ffs.

Re: BP - profits before climate
Look at it this way. China in 2023 opened 2 coal powered power stations per week in 2023. Our renewables are produced by China, with MOD having concerns on security. Our energy costs are 7 times that of China and 5 times US. There is actually no short or medium term gains from renewables. But one point that I think gets missed is that it is the poorer in society who suffer not just from costs but also from reduced work available.Fellowo wrote: ↑Wed Feb 26, 2025 6:37 am https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c3374ekd11po

Who would you trust for information? If not the BBC then certainly no news channel in the USA. Twitter? Facebook? You Tube? You certainly would not trust journalists given court cases against the Sun by Harry boy and the demise of the News of the World. Where do you go to do proper research and why do you trust them. Why would the rest of us trust anything on the internet.Mickys Bullock wrote: ↑Wed Feb 26, 2025 8:09 am Climate has always changed ffs.

In the context of this debate, the world's population will be the downfall of civilisation. These zero-emissions targets and green initiatives are really just efficiency savings on older models of the way humans have existed.Rich Tea Wellin wrote: ↑Wed Feb 26, 2025 8:01 am Further proof that capitalism will be the downfall of civilisation
With 8.2 billion people on the planet we have twice the number of inhabitants of 50 years ago and four times the number of 100 years ago. The numbers from 1825 - 1925 only doubled, but the pace of change has doubled in the past century. Add technological changes to the way we live, the stress on the planet is one that it will not be able to sustain for another 100 years. At that rate there will be over 30 billion inhabitants. I suspect nature will intervene and something far worse than covid will have an effect before we get to such numbers!

Either way, its all interlinked right? technological changes fuelled by capitalism. The way we live, in a consumer led world gets worse as the population grows but its a bit chicken and egg.
Our society is set up in a way for everyone to want more more more and to contribute more more more to the bottom line. Work hard so you can achieve the dream of owning a bigger house, which needs more materials to build, which needs more land, which burns more fuel to heat, etc...etc...

Birth rates are massively down across the world. The 'problem' is more that an increasing proportion of the world have improving living standards, which are completely tied to increased consumption. No politician in any country is going to want to start trying to reduce demand as it is essentially seen as the same as getting poorer.

Birth rates are down in the developed world are largely stable, but in Asia and Africa its up by 1.5 billion in the last 20 years; 3.5 billion in the last 50 years.Mistadobalina wrote: ↑Wed Feb 26, 2025 11:47 am Birth rates are massively down across the world. The world has always been capitalist since the dawn of time, with very few exceptions. Trump is about to get worse than the "communist" China and steal rare earth minerals from Ukraine is exchange for its support (China has been building infrastructure projects like this around the world for 2 generations or more). Capitalism is here to stay.Rich Tea Wellin wrote: ↑Wed Feb 26, 2025 11:46 amIsn't the population due to reduce soon?LittleMate wrote: ↑Wed Feb 26, 2025 11:42 amIn the context of this debate, the world's population will be the downfall of civilisation. Birth rates in Asia and Africa are also declining. East Asia in particular is looking at some pretty grim choices in the not too distant future.

Here to stay until the world becomes inhospitable I agree. The dogma around it being the only way and the way its always been will lead us to our greedy end. But at least people will have nice houses to die in.LittleMate wrote: ↑Wed Feb 26, 2025 12:03 pmThe world has always been capitalist since the dawn of time, with very few exceptions. Re: BP - profits before climate
What’s ‘green’ about electric cars & wind turbines?
These sort of technologies require vast quantities of lithium, rare earth metals, copper, nickel etc
Anyone ever done the carbon mass balance on this.
Could be oil and gas is less polluting/carbon emissions.
And what about wind turbine blades? Try recycling those, read states have got a problem with that, solved it by burying them where they will stay like that for almost ever.

I wonder if there were people like MB and RD around throughout history, decrying the efforts of Marie Curie, Fleming et al. "Grifters, only in it for the game/money?" There must have been, unless this is a peculiarly modern phenomenon in which people who may be dedicating their working lives to try and extend, save or enhance the lives of others, are dismissed as money grabbers.

Exactly , going all electric isn't the answer .PKM wrote: ↑Wed Feb 26, 2025 12:27 pm What’s ‘green’ about electric cars & wind turbines?

Talking about electric cars . If we're going all electric in five years time with new cars where are all the power points.? When are all the new power points outside every house .? No wonder it's being nicknamed nut zero . Milliiband is just blowing in the wind .
