The whole thing is a tragic indictment of the flaws of humanity.

This is the first time in human civilisation that one person has the ability to influence so many people on a global scale literally at the click of a button.

In and of itself this ability isn’t good or bad. It depends on how it’s used.

And of course, it’s being used by a megalomaniac billionaire to cause disruption, division and fanning the flames of hatred.

Another aspect of this is that it is increasingly oversimplifying what are complex political, economical, legal and ethical issues. Everything is “us v them”. The latest example being this absurd idea that you either support Tommy Robinson or you’re an apologist for rape. Just look at the comments all over Twitter. It’s stupidity of the highest order and it’s completely normalised.

It also falsely insinuates that complex topics have easy solutions that are being prevented from being implemented due to conspiracies by whichever “side” the likes of Musk decide are the bad guys. None of this is particularly original or even clever but the difference now is that this rubbish can be spread to hundreds of millions of people (possibly billions?) extremely easily.

It’s as tedious as it is dangerous.

Good question. I’ll update my New Year’s resolution post to explain.

Happy New Year by the way!

This is different to how Meta (much larger reach than Twitter) has been for over a decade..?

Genuinely interested to hear how Musk has changed the game so much

I don’t remember individual Twitter owners being anywhere near as vocal as Musk is. It’s a fair question though as my wording probably wasn’t accurate. This isn’t the first time the technology has been available - it’s been around for a while - but it’s the first time it’s being used in this way by such a powerful person.

It is clear that Musk is openly trying to (and has already succeeded) in influencing political activity across the globe. Is one person having so much power really a good thing? I don’t think it is.

Can anything be done about it? I doubt it.

The technology has been around for ages

It’s the first time the owner has been so vocally partisan I’ll give you that. However, if you don’t think Meta were influencing elections/referendums already then I implore you to have a look at 2016.

I think that’s part of the reason he bought Twitter was he saw another billionaire whom he openly dislikes with great influence via SM ownership and thought “I’ll have some of that”

That’s a good point about social media influence pre-Musk. I don’t deny that. I also don’t for a second believe that the motivations of Musk being are anything to do with altruism or good faith.

Weirdly I think the difference is just that Musk is moronic enough to get directly involved.
Definitely the big social media companies have been hugely influential over the last decade.

Would it be fair to say though that if Musk didn’t buy Twitter, Trump would probably not have been re-elected?

Are you saying Meta were allowing influencing to happen on their platforms, or that they were actively siding one way or the other?

Impossible to say definitively, definitely helped though by giving the GOP a platform to get the base out and motivate them

I think X’s influence is overstated due to their user base being a fraction of say… Meta.

It punches above its weight because politicians/business seemed to pay disproportionate attention to it
