Can I second you on this. Tinned salmon sandwiches were our regular Sunday tea. Mega luxury was if it was red salmon rather than pink.

Freshly caught lobster for a starter & mackrel
for main course .
Occasionally we would have champ with the mackrel
to remind of us those who may struggle

Thirded guys. John West red tinned salmon on a Sunday and a box of dates at Christmas.

Vesta Beef Curry - my Mum used to make my Dad one on a Saturday lunchtime and I thought the smell was so exotic. Also, Steak and chips at the Berni Inn, the White Hart in Brentwood was a special treat. The Duck in Orange sauce was way above their budget though./

Re: Posh food- retro edition
Years ago fish was really cheap while chicken was really expensive. Nowadays even fish and chips for a family of 4 demands a remortgage. The saying “I don’t make fish for one and fowl for another” , is reversed today as chicken is so cheap by comparison.

Re: Posh food- retro edition
Chicken was only for Christmas later replaced by Turkey.
The Sunday Joint (Lamb or Beef) lasted for 3 days. Monday was cold meat and chips, Tuesday the remaining meat was made into meat pies or rissoles. Wednesday was fish (cheap) and chips. Thursday was stew (often Ox tail which I hated). Friday was Steak (luxury). Puddings were great with Suet and Sponge puddings and on birthdays Baked Alaska.
