Got black marks around / above window frames in 2 bedrooms. What action do i take please? Get a damp co in? Get something from B & Q? Thanks. Up the O's!

Inside? What room is this in? Water in the air will be drawn to the coldest surface, probably the area you talk about because i would guess when the windows were fitted they didnt fill above the area properly.

This sounds like black mould caused by condensation. Do you dry clothes indoors or know what the source of the water could be?

Rising damp would come from the ground upwards.
Penetrating damp would come from a water source leaking onto an area, like a leaking gutter or pipe.

Open windows in all levels. Consider getting an air brick installed.

Short term you can get anti mould paint from most places. Go over it but it will probably return if there isn’t decent airflow.

Most damp trades people are bandits in my experience. They try to flog you expensive, invasive treatments that don't deal with what is normally the main issue, which is a lack of ventilation. Air bricks, passive air vents and air vent tiles will deal with most problems. But you might have water ingressing from somewhere so worth getting someone into look.

I would get the roof and gutters checked if i were you. Have a look from the outside if you can, particuarly if its raining, you may be able to see if something is dripping onto that area.

School friend of No. 1 daughter works for a "Damp" company. I remember him saying that there work would be cut in half if people opened windows more to let air in and out and circulate. On the other side is, if you do that and get burgled, the insurance company won't pay up.

Clean the mould with a water/bleach solution as said before if airing drying clothes open windows if not always leave a least one window on a vent or a vent open if old type plastic window frames you can attached an air vent yourself.

Stick an air pump in your loft to throw fresh air in from outside, forcing the damp air inside the house out.
