Re: Climate change - is it a real thing?
And from an acute local perspective:
https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/art ... mperatures
The previous highest UK temperature in 2024 was 32C, recorded at Heathrow and Kew Gardens, south-west London, on 29 July.
In a further sign of the climate crisis, the Met Office said provisionally this was the 11th year since the 60s to have seen temperatures as high as 34.8C but six of them have been in the past decade.
It wrote on X: “It’s been the hottest day of 2024 so far with 34.8C recorded in Cambridge today. “Provisionally this is only the 11th year since 1961 temperatures as high as this have been recorded.
“Eight of those years have been since 2000 and six of them have been in the last decade.”

I don't think that's even up for debate, it's the cause that is. Personally, I'll go with the general scientific consensus that it is man made. Even if that is found to be incorrect it still creates a nicer world to live in making air, water and forests cleaner.

Re: Climate change - is it a real thing?
That's pretty much my take. I've actually tried reading some meta-reports and articles by actual scientists in sciencey retail publications (which is probably more than what most activists have done).
The uncomfortable, and rather depressing, consensus seems to be that:
Climate change is definitely real. It's what it's always done and is measurable.
Human industrial civilization is probably contributing to the effects of climate change. This is being noted as data is collected which can be compared with pre-industrial times.
All the climate modelling is accepted as being unreliable, as there's simply no way to ever factor in all the variables that exist within an actual climate environment and over time.
This modelling is our main way of anticipating climate changes and the effects it may have on our lives. Modelling throws out parameter results, with the most optimistic being pounced on by invested parties, and the most negative by the catastrophist cults.
But the best guess is that human impact will accelerate and amplify the changes that would otherwise have occurred.
Most (but not all) green tech solutions that are touted from time to time are bullsh*t or just unrealistic. This has also been my experience in it's application in modern building construction. At worse, their environmental impact is worse than conventional tech. At best, it is the same, only the negative impact is out of the public's line of sight.
The public do not appreciate just how much their survival depends on oil. Not just the black stuff, but all of the industry by-products. If we were to Just Stop Oil, billions would die within a relativily short time frame. There's almost certainly nothing that can realistically be done or achieved at a global level to alter any of the impact human activity will be having on the rate and degree of climate change we will now experience.
Now, go and wash out that marmite jar before throwing it in the recycling bin. (Recycling is also a total waste of time).

Yeah yeah, blah blah blah Dunnem. It’s simple: just stop oil.

Typical CEB nonsense: make a lot of noise over irrelevances and do nothing. You don't have to break the law, or even be much of a nuisance. But it is a moral duty to make more people aware, especially on the seriousness of the situation. On the Beeb today, reports that the death toll from serious heatwaves in Europe are underestimated. Time to smell the coffee ( actually it's smell the burning heathland & fields ).

Yeah, people aren’t aware of climate change. Most people said “eh? Climate change? I have never heard of that” before the nice lady threw orange powder on the snooker table

So Dunnem, you’re saying there is no other way? We have to keep on using oil?

No - all I’m saying is that it’s unlikely that anything we do will make any difference.Hoover Attack wrote: ↑Tue Aug 13, 2024 8:23 am So Dunnem, you’re saying there is no other way? We have to keep on using oil?
I wouldn’t advise against recycling if it makes you feel better, though.
As I just said though, most of the apparent “solutions” have an even worse impact further down the line

Re: Climate change - is it a real thing?
Yes , the climate is changing but it's nothing new . Ever since the creation of the planet the climate has been changing . The planet went through a period scientists call "Snowball Earth' when the plant was totally covered in ice for millions of years . The Earth was much warmer during prehistoric times than it is now. . Also historians have claimed Romans were growing grapes out in the open as far North as Yorkshire . What I want to know is where were all the fcuking cars ? I kid you not I heard on the radio the other day that some scientists now think we could be heading towards another ice age . What happened to global warming . ? It's called climate change now because global warming doesn't fit the narrative anymore . It's funny how people never think about the sun and how that's the main driver of our weather patterns . I would just like to add that pollution is a different issue and is obviously a man made problem .

Wow! Just Wow! I think you've just quoted every bit of batty bollox from "the climate change deniers" bumper book of bullshit. Well done. Global warming is driving the changes we're seeing with our climate. As an example rising Ocean temperatures are affecting currents which drive weather systems throughout the World.RedDwarf 1881 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 13, 2024 11:06 am Yes , the climate is changing but it's nothing new . Nice of you to concede that pollution is "a different issue" but of course it plays a huge part in climate change. The only thing you got right is that the climate has changed throughout the life of the planet - the difference now being the speed of that change. If we can recognise climate changes in our own pitifully short lifespan then we are truly in deep sh-it.

Donald Trump, a major property developer, has noted an upside to rising sea levels in that it will create more beach front real estate. So it's not all bad news.

Wow , it seems like you've also swallowed a load of bullshit . Global warming is a massive con . Getting to net zero is going to cost us a fortune while countries like China and India can happily burn fossil fuels galoreBoniO wrote: ↑Tue Aug 13, 2024 11:59 amWow! Just Wow! Still following the Trump and Farage line on climate change then !!
Interesting to note that following Trumps chat with Elon Musk on X Trump came up with these Gems ''he described the electric cars made by Tesla as "incredible." As usual he also praised Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un - all authoritarian strongmen - as at the "top of their game."

At the " top of there game " for the agenda's they are following which means we need strong leadership in the West . I look at Biden and Harris and I just think , dear God . just to go off topic slightly , If Biden is fit enough to run again for President how comes he's still fit enough t stay as President for the next five months . I suppose the answer is Obama is serving his third term in office by pulling all of Biden strings .
