Ebay question about an annoying seller

I bought a decent sized Lego set on eBay a couple of weeks ago.

It's taken me a while to put together as I'm not the sharpest tool in the box, and I can't see very well. I've been letting the seller know about a few bits I can't find from time to time but wasn't really sure whether they were actually missing or whether I just couldn't find them. He told me to wait til I've finished it and not to keep bothering him.

I've just finished building it and - can you believe it - there's 5 bits missing. Not only that, there's a load of extra bits from some other set. I reckon the seller knew there were 5 bits missing and just lobbed in some extra ones to make up the numbers.

I politely explained the situation to him and asked him if he'd send me the missing bits. Reasonable, I thought, and a quick solution to keep both sides happy. But no, he's told me to either go out and buy them myself and send him the bill, or send the whole f**king lot back for a full refund.

To be fair to him he said sorry but that's not the point and I don't see why he won't remedy the situation himself. "The customer's always right" and all that.

I didn't want to escalate this to eBay but what other option do I have? I know the 5 pieces probably only cost 84p but why should I have to pay my bus fair to the shops to buy them myself and then get that refunded? I asked him if he'd pay my bus fair but he said "no, why can't you walk" but I can't with my legs like they are. I can't buy the missing bits online either (I'm too embarassed to explain why).

Am I being unreasonable expecting him to just send me the missing bits?

Tell him that you’ll go for the full refund option but say that you’ll only send it back when he’s sent half of the refund amount to you. He can send the rest when the set has been returned.

When he sends half the refund keep the set and use the money to buy the missing pieces online and keep the rest as a fee for having to spend your time sourcing the missing pieces yourself.
