Evidently they are close to crisis point. The tactical support group was called into action on 75 occasions last month alone which is unprecedented. All very worrying. What has happened to the infrastructure of the national institutions in the UK? More importantly, what is the way forward? I know Margaret Thatcher’s legacy is revered by many, but, in my view, one of the most damaging things she said was: “There is no such thing as society.”

Saint Helena Island and Ascension Island.
They're sat there, down in the South Atlantic, doing next to f*ck all. Why don't we just make all prison sentences a one-way ticket and then leave the prisoners to themselves. They'll either all kill each other, or figure out another way to structure a society. Either way it's a win-win. I'm only surprised nobody has thought of this before.

Have any prisons been built recently? How many people are being sent to prison?

Time to bring back the death penalty, there's plenty in prisons that will never leave so what's the point in keeping them fed and watered.

I saw Starmer has put the Timpson’s guy in charge of Prisons etc. Seems like an actual good idea

Imaginative, yes. There was another thread I read today that mentioned stereotypes. Some offenders deserve a second chance, no? What about miscarriages of justice?

Prisons is one of the best examples of Tory neglect of the public realm and their mindset of knowing the cost of everything but value of nothing, because it's one of the least publicly obvious yet has some of the worst 'downstream' impacts and is related to other areas where they've f*cked it, which all up to cost even more money.
19% of people in prisons are either awaiting sentencing or trial. This is a record high and caused by a court system that is failing due to cuts.
14% are recall prisoners. This is also a record high and due to cuts to rehabilitation programmes. 1 out of 37 male prisons has a good rating on the 'how do you get these people reintegrated into society' assessment.
Penny pinching in both areas has ended up costing us far more money and people caught in a cycle of reoffending, state dependency and criminality.
Average prison sentences have also gone up significantly. So we send more people into a worse prisons system for longer.

Track down everyone who voted Tory over the last 14 years and impose an additional 10% tax surcharge on them all for the next 14 years - they caused this, let them pay for it.

That'd require me to show that I don't know this stuff off the top of my head and nicked it from a source. But since you asked:

Bring back executions, public ones would be ideal, better than some of the rubbish in TV.
Everyone is a winner, prisons reduce numbers and it’s a day out for the family.
