Just Stop IT

Post by ContrifibulatoryFred »

After last week’s outage whereby planes, trains and banks were brought down by a computer update, do you think it might be time to halt the relentless drive towards complete reliance on IT?

I for one am fed up of the refusal of retailers and pubs to accept cash - legal tender. Why should we trust IT when it’s created a golden age for fraudsters and scammers?

So many retailers automatically grab the card reader, but are pleasantly surprised when good old cash is proffered. Presumably, it means someone can take the cash to the bank and leave the premises for a while. Fewer Securicor jobs, though. (No, I am not sure what I am on about…)

It’s not IT that’s the issue, we need to remove human interference. Let the systems maintain themselves, this way errors are less likely. This is message has been endorsed by Skynet.

The over-reliance on IT can be dangerous – and I work in IT myself. I always carry cash, generally pay by card these days but have been a number of occasions when there has been a card paying issue, people stuck at petrol stations with only cards, and I’ve just popped out the cash and am soon on my way.

A mate and his family had a shower issue recently, plumber came and said ah yes it’s the CPU. Er what he said?! IT is in places one really doesn’t expect it!

Apparently the UK is the country with the highest number of card transactions as a proportion in Europe as American card as the big payment card companies (Visa, MasterCard etc) have absolutely put UK politicians in their pocket. Which is wild when you see how sh*tty the card system is out in the states.

That said, it's obviously much more convenient and there's almost certainly massive pub productivity gains in reducing the amount of faffing around counting out cash and working out change.

Someone I know works in cyber security, they say that there are so many holes in the system they will not trust anything electric. Cash and personal visits to the the bank only.

Read whatever you like into that but look at how many problems the banks have had over the last year and you can start to understand the issues.

My feeling is that whatever banks lose to fraud is still cheaper than them having branch networks and employees.
They don’t give a damn about customers really. Hence fraud is for them merely an inconvenience.

If or when your phone is stolen, you are well and truly scuppered:
Can't inform your bank.
Can't travel as your ticket is on the phone.
Can't call anyone for help/ rescue as all your contact numbers were on the phone.
No money and no means for communication.
And if your diary is also on your phone, you won't even know where you're supposed to be. :clown
