Didnt realise he was an olympian as well.

This is probably a good decision, so he can focus on World Cup 2026.

I just hope that England can get a decent replacement for him, Jurgen Klopp would be a good fit although at present I think he needs a break from football to recharge his batteries !

His record in four tournaments has surpassed any previous manager, except for Sir Alf’s World Cup win in ’66, and that speaks for itself.

I like him as a person, he brought respect to the role.

Felt he was often too reactive and not proactive enough, no more so than in the recent Euros, when we were fortunate not to exit in the round of 16, but we reached the final and can’t argue with that or his overall record. Thanks Gareth and good luck.

Certainly not a "sh-t' manager, but not adventurous enough and lacked a bit of bottle, especially in the case of Kane who everyone could quite clearly see was just not up to it at the Euros.

At least the England team can drop all the woke nonsense now.

He tried to be too tactical. Choosing different set ups for every game and was too defensive. Made a major error in retaining Kane.

England have the players to develop an attacking style and to stick to it for each game with minor adjustments against different teams. That's what Spain do. But I fear the mentality is not there but at one time Spain were serial losers too.

Good, lets move on now and prepare for 2026 with a new coach.
I'm thinking probably Graham Potter, evens with the bookies

Had to go, made too many repeated mistakes at this tournament.
But his been a better England manager than many, good luck to him in the future

Was obvious that new ideas are needed.

Southgate may have been more successful, but alot of that is down to being fortunate in avoiding big clubs and that the standard has descended over recent years.

Didn't say he was my choice, just repeating what the bookies are saying
I said something very similar on here when Southgate was appointed.
Think my actual words were we will never win anything with him in charge.
Not a winner, never has been and his only claim to fame is missing a penalty.

Got slated by many for that opinion so if it is him why not give someone else unfancied a chance.
Potter did much better at Brighton than Southgate managed at Middlesbrough.
Never got a chance at Chelsea with their crazy US owners who just bought anyone and everyone.

Pep seems to think more of him than you do, who knows best, modern ultra successful manager or message board ranter?
Guardiola admitted that he was a "big fan" of Potter, saying that Potter's "Brighton are a joy to watch, a joy to analyse" and that his "players move with freedom and everyone knows what they have to do. They have the courage to play everywhere."

I'm sure we can all rely on the FA to take its time and make a wise decision.

Prediction - 10 years from now, Southgate will be revered in the same way as Robson and Venables are.

About time too, would never have won a major competition.I just hope the new England Manager will not play the negative, boring style that Southgate adopted. We need a Manager that will get the team playing attractive, attacking football that will not only be entertaining but will finally result in England winning a major competition.
There have been to many England Managers that may have tried but have only been losers, we need a winner.

He did a lot right, galvanised the team, but was tactically limited. At the end of the day he won as much as any of our other managers over the last 50 years. Thanks for the effort, hopefully we can get someone tactically better in though.

Happy he’s gone, was a nice man but a bad tactician and manager. We would and should have beaten Italy in the final if it wasn’t for Southgate. If I was a betting man I would put my money on Lee Carsley? Personally I would ask Jürgen Klopp. As for Potter I’d rather have Harry Potter. He eas successful because of two things,1) he had good players to pick from of which he always picked the wrong ones 2) he was just bloody lucky.

Doubt that.

I believe a lot of the negative comments towards Southgate were because many commentators felt that with the talent at his disposal, he should have done a lot better. We scraped past a number of teams and never looked like we were going to win a game convincingly.

All those bigging him up to be this generation’s Alex Ferguson - Watch how quickly (or not) he gets another elite manager’s job……

Anyone but Pochettino, another non winner and Kane fan who also played him in a final when obviously unfit.
