Apologies if I am repeating a comment already shared above, but could the fact that Richie was missing from the Starman event be because he wanted to distance himself from the playing staff at this time, as he has some difficult decisions to make for the retained list.

So if Wellens goes, it’s reasonable to infer that the next manager will be hired on the basis of not demanding the resources Wellens will (unless they somehow manage to hire someone who thinks he can push orient to the next level on a budget)
We don't yet know the reasons Richie wants out, we're just guessing.

The good thing with him is we will find out.

Totally agree with you about his quality. Is he holding the club to ransom, though?

Having said that, he must know that he is popular with the fans and he is building something here.

2: Richie not being present at things doesn’t hint that he’s off. The club not being casually open about why hints that something is off

3: the club shouldn’t be expected to make statements about everything people get antsy about, but the current pattern of events combined with radio silence from the club is exactly in keeping with a reasonable policy of “we won’t say anything official until there’s something official to say”

4: three becomes more pertinent when you consider that we’re the club to issue any reassurances about the manager that they couldn’t keep, it would go down very badly with fans who renewed season tickets after a reassurance, who were then less than impressed with the replacement

5: the season is over. Have a little break. In a week you can start moaning about how late we’re leaving transfer activity again
Sure manager betting odds are not much of a reliable indicator. But 1/4 makes me sit up a bit.

What he has here is everything he’s wanted as a manager. There is zero indication he wants to leave yet fans are already wondering who his replacement will be. Almost to the point of obsession.

Yes, everything except the opportunity to progress to a higher level any time soon, and make a decent go of it.

It's a well known fact that with our ground hamstrung by an inadequate capacity, we wouldn't be able to compete financially in the Championship. And a new, bigger ground is 10 years away. So he either puts up and shuts up with that, knowing that if we went up, there'd be no decent resources for the squad and we become another Rotherham for 10 years, or he can possibly progress to Championship football at a bigger club with greater resources (and decent sized stadium).

What would you do?

I don’t buy that. Bournemouth, Luton and Brentford all got into and maintained life in the Championship with a stadium of a similar size to ours.

You would think that the club would at least put out a denial after all they don’t stop sending emails to people asking for ST renewals, half price merchandise and streaming opportunities. The fact they were asking people to sign up early this year for ST makes me a little sceptical?. Hope I’m wrong about this?

I'm merely reiterating pretty much what Nigel, Kent and Mark Devlin have said recently about the future sustainability of the club. They themselves recognise we are in a very difficult situation. If you were Richie would you not seriously consider the option of managing a club that does not have the financial constraints we have, and would no doubt pay you more money to do so (and is on your home patch to boot)?

Brentford and Bournemouth also massively subsidised by very rich owners to get there. It's certainly one way of doing things but not exactly replicable for us.

Bournemouth’s average attendance in their first year in the Championship was 9,114 their promotion season to the Championship was 6,852.

Luton’s last year in league one was 9,516. Their first in the Championship 7,863 even if you take into account the few games that covid affected, the next full season at that level was 9,921.

Brentford was 7,716 in their final year in league one. In the Championship, it ranged from 10,822 to 10,257.

Luton and Bournemouth clearly show a big new stadium isn’t necessary to be competitive at this level and to aim for promotion.

We need investors with a lot of money, not more bums on seats with the club saddled with 10s of millions of debt paying for a new stadium.

It's really not an either or. If we had a 18k stadium with potential for expansion, based in the fastest growing part of the richest city in the most popular country for football, it's obviously a much more enticing proposition for potential investors.

What Luton has achieved is bonkers and noteworthy because of how improbable it is.

Actually , I wouldn't mind us becoming another Rotherham . Championship football peppered with successful seasons in League One . That doesn't sound too bad to me .

I understand where you are coming from. It's possible (but nowadays increasingly unlikely/unusual).

However regarding
"What he has here is everything he’s wanted as a manager."
we can't be sure. I'd hazard he is very ambitious, and we know regarding future Championship sustainability (big investors, deep pockets, bigger ground), we are merely 'if and buts', whereas a team like Barnsley are a certainty.

Sustainability is the key word here. Getting into the Championship through a freak season, or having a generational talent in charge, is one thing. Staying there for more than a season is another. Luton, Bournemouth and Brentford all attracted crowds that were greater in size than our ground can currently hold - relying on the ownership to subsidise extraordinary operating losses is all well and good until they lose interest/go mad/die/are revealed as a crook/other business interests go tits up/war breaks out in their home country etc etc and then there's a real risk of plummet and existential crisis again. Far better to build a Club that can sustain itself at that level with a more ordinary level of operating loss, because you can find 15,000 bums to roll up week in, week out, and then when your owners decide they've had enough, you're a more attractive proposition.

Nothing sustainable about saddling the club with £80m of debt to build a stadium that may attract another 5,000 through the gates
