Re: Dubai
Always looked like one of the last places I'd want to visit, even before it went underwater.

Re: Dubai
Now all we need is an earthquake to level Marbella and a nasty bout of pestilence to strike Las Vegas for the hat trick.

Re: Dubai
It's a real indicator when you encounter people who talk about Dubai as if it's in any way a desirable destination. And I don't care how snobbish that makes me sound, you all know the sort.

Re: Dubai
I've been about 20 times in the last 28 years, all but two on business and those two "holidays" were to see my nephew and family who work and live there. Mrs NES doesn't like it. I was Ok visiting it on business. It was an occupational hazard for me going to overseas cities for work. But I will never understand the Europeans who go there to go shopping in the Malls, when there are the same shops in major European cities and places like Lakeside & Bluewater. Bonkers IMO.
There was bad rain when I was there about 12 years ago in February and the Malls then suffered from leaks through their roofs; so it looks like no lessons have been learnt about making roofs weathertight.

Re: Dubai
Not been. I've been told its 'very safe'. What do people not like about it? Being new, is it kind of like Milton Keynes?

Re: Dubai
Dubai is a very marmite place. Like a lot of places we holiday in, you have to close your eyes to some things, but I enjoy the weather and the levels of service in their hotels. Been 3 times.
Vegas is equally marmite, but I'd say don't judge the place until you have been. Its the west end on steroids; the biggest adult playground in the world. For shows, food, sports entertainment its at the very top of the world's pinnacle. The gambling element is largely overstated these days and is much diminished in importance in the past 20-30 years.
FWIW there are places in Spain and the Canaries that are worse than many elements of either of these - but all are popular.
