Announcing high attendances is a good marketing tool. People see it and think there's something interesting happening at the Brisbane Road Stadium, and think I must get myself down there and join the herd.
Who remembers the Torquay 1st home game of the season back in the early Bazza days. The attendance was a made up number of 8k when we all know it was really 5K.

Do you have an overwhelming urge to know how many people attended a cinema showing you were at, or how many people turned up to the pub quiz?

It also helps with getting more money out of sponsors, catering deals, etc…

Just call it what it is then: number of tickets sold.
Doubt that it would attract as much applause during the game as when 7,000 people congratulate themselves for being 8.200. I guess we all like to pretend we're bigger than we actually are.
