Jailed Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny is dead, the prison service of the Yamalo-Nenets region where he had been serving his sentence, has said. Mr Navalny, an outspoken critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has been in Russian jail since 2021 on charges that are widely viewed as politically motivated. Kira Yarmysh, Navalny's spokesperson, said his team had yet to receive confirmation of the death but his lawyer was now travelling to Siberia
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russian's penitentiary service was making all checks regarding Navalny's death but had no information about the matter. In August, Navalny was found guilty of founding and funding an extremist organisation, which he denies, and was given an extra 19 years to his existing sentence. He had already been sentenced to nine years for parole violations, fraud and contempt of court.

European Council President Charles Michel has said the bloc considers the Russian regime to bear "sole responsibility" for Navalny's "tragic death".
In a post on X, Michel said Navalny "fought for the values of freedom and democracy" and made the "ultimate sacrifice" for his ideals.
"I extend my deepest condolences to his family. And to those who fight for democracy around the world in the darkest conditions. Fighters die. But the fight for freedom never ends," Michel added.

Really? So he happily 'put his family and his life on a plate' as sacrifices to please the CIA?

I for one am quite alarmed to read about Putin's real objectives, namely to undermine regions that gained individual nationhood since the collapse of the Soviet Union. He never accepted that 'loss' and hates it. His threat to Finland now, also threats to Latvia, Estonia, Poland and Lithuania show what he really is about. Putin is the real danger to Europe right now.

I saw the brave souls on tv news who dared to lay flowers in his memory in Russia and some brave young women who were interviewed who dared to voice their opinions about the death of Alexei Navalny and life in Putins Russia.
