Forum for a Fiver: Contribute to our running costs

The hosting fees for running this website are £300+ per year. If anyone can spare a fiver (or more) it'd be much appreciated.
This is better than ads cluttering the place.

I'm out, as I really don't see how I can get my investment back

That's barely 10p per alias for some but I've done my bit for my 1. Ever thought of trying ads?

Did try some ads and it was looking promising until Google suspended my account for no reason.

I think it was because of the income earned. Google got jealous.

Okay the actual reason they gave was 'multiclicking', so they're annoyed that people actually clicked on their weird ads.

Have you considered some sort of tier system for donations?
£10 = 1 free pass on a banning offence
£25 = 3 free passes on banning offences
£30 = become moderator for a day
£50 = become a moderator for a week
£100 = become a moderator a month

Done. The Rev's onto something though, there could be a tier/perks system. £25 for an exclusive alias reveal, for £50 you get to shadow caca for a day (just in general, follow him about at work and that), £150 to get access to user's email addresses.

How much to be allowed to use the moderators' toilets?

Thanks all, really heartened to see the amount donated so far. And only one anonymous abusive message so far!

Donated. It's been a while since I've had a website, but 300 quid seems a hell of a lot, I thought aws and Google had brought costs down, especially on a site like this that requires minimal ram and CPU

Yeah, but you have to factor in the word count of an average CEB post.

I will be challenging it. If they bring the price down then the money goes towards further years.

Can I just jump in here with a bit of background?
As you might (or probably not) have noticed, I've hardly been around over the last couple of months due to family illnesses and other work issues that have taken up almost every waking moment since November. Like every family, you go through tough periods and the FTC clan finds itself in one now.
In the midst of all this, I renewed the domain registration and hosting for another year however the costs have risen massively since this latest iteration of the MB was set up in 2019. Just before Xmas I said to LSN that given everything that is going on away from here which is likely to take months to resolve, I couldn't commit any time at all to dealing with the place and paying out another years cost when this latest subscription expires later this year.
Whilst LSN's appointment as an Admin wasn't the most popular decision ever made with some here, I can only be grateful that I did hand the reins over to him I'd again repeat my honest and complete thanks to him for making massive efforts over that last couple of years to ensure this MB continues to survive. I've been here for over 20 years now and still consider this place to be a unique online community and there's nothing more I'd like to see it still here in another 20 years time.
It is heartening to see so many donations received already and I'd like to thank everyone who's done so and supported the MB's continued existence.
Peace and love.
FTC x

People should have to pay £5/£10 for a username or have a free account using their real name....

Best wishes to you and your clan, FTC. Sorry to hear you're going through some troubled waters, but hope you get past this as soon as possible. I really appreciate the time and effort that you put in to the place but of course more important things have to take precedence.
Thanks also to LSN for stepping up to the plate.
I think for my £20 I get to post as many Wordle's as I fancy !!
