I loved Vigoroux, but he was a rubbish at kicking the ball long. We've got another keeper who is okay, but his long kicking is also rubbish. When are we going to get a keeper who can long kick the ball to an Orient player, or even near an Orient player over the halfway line? As teams have cottoned on to our playing it out of defence and are closing us down quickly, a good long kick would provide opportunities to attach which we are seriously lacking.

Not the way they play now. They ponce around the penalty area, get put under pressure and end up kicking in row Z in the stand. It’s a new concept brought in by foreign managers.

If we want to play out from the back, I guess kicking long isn't deemed to be a priority. And probably the truth is that if we had a keeper who was a decent shot stopper, good with his feet for short passing and could also pick a 50 yard pass, then he wouldn't be playing in L1.

Vigaroux's long kicking was ridiculous for L2.

It takes some adjusting to, and some patience as people get antsy and shout “GET RID!!!!!!” - and yeah, it is frustrating when an attempt to play out from the back ends in a hoof anyway - but when it works, and results in an opportunity, it is fantastic to watch

Yes CEB when it works, brilliant however you need players that have the capability to play that way ie Man City when we do it,it ends up with Happe hitting a long diagonal over the lineman’s head

It’s clearly not working at the moment, for sure. But also, long balls aren’t guaranteed to work at this level either.

Not his fault linos these days aren't tall enough.

The idea is to keep hold of the ball(possession, is the key) but there was nothing wrong with getting your fullbacks wide and giving it to them as soon as possible imo. That way you’re cutting down the angle of attack if the opponent does get the ball. Not directly in the middle of the pitch. It’s just my opinion but styles change coaching changes and if pep Guardiola says it’s the way to play everyone follows suit until another foreign manager comes up with something else

Who are we going long to with our current options? We tried it against Oxford and got absolutely dominated. The way teams are up to move the ball up the pitch, to press, to attack in the final third, is so complicated these days, even with the more old fashioned teams.

Who was the last English manager to actually achieve anything at the top level, or the last time an English manager had any influence on how other countries played the game? Probably not since the 80s. We don't produce many good managers or coaches is the reality, so will always follow innovations from abroad.

True, wouldn’t mind if they went long and smacked the two bald guys in the mush

I think that this, from 2008, is the correct answer. So not as far back in time as you thought.

Ahh yes one of a long line of successful English managers that have influenced our game

Isn't it usually a red card offence for kicking a goalkeeper?

Playing out from the back worked last season (mind you most things did). I just think that other teams have decided to press our defenders now to stop us doing it. I don't think going long to at least the vicinity of one of our forwards is that hard. Certainly better then what we do at the moment.

I would like to see the Brynn distribute it quicker. His accuracy is fine.

Man City and even Brighten are very good at it. When the other teams press, it allows the defenders to pass through the lines to the midfield who then have real space to spread the ball around - on the ground.
