Cycle Rides
I gave up cycling about 5 years ago. I reckon once past 70 unless you are exceptionally fit, cycling is far too dodgy. I've always like cycling, especially as a young teenagers. The longest journeys I clocked up in a day were: Tufnell Park to Guildford & my Uncle took me & bike to Richmond, so back from there 58 miles in a day; also cycled to my brother in Cranham & back 50 miles in a day.
Anyone else out there done or doing long cycle trips? There was a heck of a lot less traffic in the 1960's, but the A3 was still very busy & quite formidable.

Re: Cycle Rides
I go cycling around the Country Park and adjacent quiet streets of the Hamlet of Hornchurch early on a Sunday morning, when there is very little traffic around and only a few loose dogs around the park. I do about 8-10 miles. I won't cycle midweek because of the amount of traffic.

Re: Cycle Rides
I used to cycle a 16-mile round trip as a commute every day. Despite a few incidents, it definitely kept me healthy. But some health issues (now kind of sorted) in 2017 put a stop to that, and since then I've only been able to enjoy the odd day out on a town bike I have.
There's definitely better infrastructure now for cyclists, but more needs to be done to make towns and cities safer. Having spent time in the Netherlands I am envious of what they have and how they have returned their towns and cities to pedestrians and cyclists.

Re: Cycle Rides
Shame many cyclists seem so reckless and entitled to still ride on pavements and not on the millions of pounds infrastructure created for them through initiatives. I say this as a keen cyclist too. It is appalling how some cyclists behave. The delivery rides with super enhanced addition battery power added , ride around my way in dark clothing without any lights at night, working for major companies delivering food and diving with death.Dunners wrote: ↑Fri Nov 10, 2023 9:01 am I used to cycle a 16-mile round trip as a commute every day. Re: Cycle Rides
A friend of my son had his back and neck broken two weeks ago whilst he was riding his cycle in a cycle lane in high Road Leytonstone and got ‘T Boned’ by a food delivery rider doing a high speed out of a junction. Poor lad still in hospital without a clear prognosis. I am told that these bikes can speed at over 50 mph. In an era when the Mayor is reducing cars to 2O MPH in areas of LondonEliotNes wrote: ↑Fri Nov 10, 2023 9:10 amSo so true. Re: Cycle Rides
I woke up one day when I was about 17 and decided to ride from Romford to Liverpool st. Was fun, in a way but then I had to get home!
My first office job in Brentwood I used to cycle in and home every day for about a year cos I couldn’t afford the train. About 15 miles a day. Used to f*cking dread getting to brook st round about and having to go up that hill. One day my bike gave up and after trying to drag it home for half hour I just threw it down an embankment next to the a12.
When I was in east London I rode to Victoria for work but gave up after about 3 months because it was terrifying every day

Have screenshot this thread and sent it to the Council, hope there's no statute of limitations regarding fly tipping.Rich Tea Wellin wrote: ↑Fri Nov 10, 2023 9:46 am I just threw it down an embankment next to the a12.

Re: Cycle Rides
Not epic journeys but I cycle into work and back (Leyton - Southwark) 3 days a week (4 pre-pandemic).
It’s a lovely ride through QEOP, Vicky Park and once through Bethnal it’s all cycle lanes. Really enjoy it, even in pony weather.

Some of these simps are an absolute menace. Though of course, "mainly" to themselves.Loin Cloth Lenny wrote: ↑Fri Nov 10, 2023 9:08 amShame many cyclists seem so reckless and entitled to still ride on pavements and not on the millions of pounds infrastructure created for them through initiatives. Nothing will be done as, it's difficult to make money from two wheeled transport, so the interest level from His Highness will be negligible to zero.
