Alternatively it's to be expected when you are playing a man short & said man is your main bowler

And there is a Starc difference between the two.

I'm not saying there isn't, and I'm not necessarily saying that the state of this test thus far would be any different. Only, that the fact of the matter is, we are virtually playing this one with ten men, and minus our top bowler.

I guess I shall have to improve my Starc puns so CCH gets them.

England had the Aussies right where they wanted them at two points in this game- 122/8 and when building a lead in the second innings. Only having a lead of 90 after both of those events is not far short of a disgrace.

I can't help but feel that there is something quite a bit fundamentally wrong with the test team, in complete contrast to the one-day team. I feel we need a really innovative captain that I don't think Root is. Taking so long to move up to 3, Bairstow refusing to bat above 7, the arrogant use of reviews by both bowlers and batsmen and the way in which we seem incapable of not collapsing every other game are worrying signs.

I do wonder if the sandpaper goading by the jailer worly cup champs supporters led to a stand of defiance by the talented chief "convict ".

Food for thought ?

Agree. Just about stepping up in the big games. Our spinners took 2 wickets yesterday on a wearing wicket...Lyons has 6 on his own today, that says it all.

None of our slow bowlers are anywhere near the level Lyon is at and has been at for some time. We are carrying so many players. Who can you say is actually worthy of their place right now? Root, Woakes and Broad and that's pretty much it apart from Stokes who is always worth having around. Bairstow is woefully out of form and not needed as a specialisty keeper with Buttler as well as Foakes who can keep, Burns looks unconvincing- did well for his ton but never looked toally comfortable with a flawed techinque, Roy looks like a caged animal batting with one hand behind his back, Denly is not good enough I'm afraid. I love Moeen Ali but his form in both disciplines is woeful.

That said, I wouldn't panic and make wholesale changes. I'd bring Curran in because he is a fighter, like Stokes, and a quick- Stone or Archer- for Anderson as well as maybe Foakes for any of the underperforming batsmen.

For what it’s worth I’d drop Denly buttler, bairstow and Ali (a walking wicket against Lyon on any surface) and leave out the injured anderson. I wouldn’t change the openers again for lords what’s the point.....this would be my eleven for lords;

Burns
Roy
Root
Malan
Stokes
Foakes (wk)
Woakes
Curran (Sam)
Broad
Archer
Leach
