RE interview - transfers
From Ross Embletons interview after the game it does sound like more players to come in before the window shuts but he says “ we have gone from being the big boys who can go and get who we want when we want to being bottom of the pile and having to wait for others to make their decisions”

Re: RE interview - transfers
I guess it depends on the sort of players you are trying to sign. When we were in the Conference, we were a massive club and any decent non-league players would have to consider signing for us. But now we are in League 2 and looking to sign better quality players, we have reverted to being little Leyton Orient again and players can be much more choosy.

All things are relative and we're no longer the big fish in the small pond. We've migrated to a bigger pond and are now much lower down the food chain.

Re: RE interview - transfers
I do seem to recall someone rejecting us for those super giants Ebbsfleet. So much for getting who we want. We couldn’t out do super Fleet.what bolox. More excuses early on.
Don’t say much for those who we have signed does it.

So we are where players end up when they can’t do better elsewhere. That’s a recommendation if ever I’ve heard one.Disoriented wrote: ↑Sat Jul 27, 2019 9:27 pmHmmmmm.

Gawd who pi$$ed on your corn flakes this morning?
Could it be the case that the club are relying on other clubs high up the food chain signing players before they can let them go to us or Free agents trying out higher up before deciding to then sign for The O's.

We are now back in the league and back to no ambition.
It seems to me that a mid table finish for the next 5 years is acceptable to some, but people will soon get fed up when we are overtaken my newly born promoted non league clubs.
The fact is that last season we weren’t great but got over the line being led by a superb manager. The next couple of weeks will show the true ambition of the club.

Re: RE interview - transfers
I suppose Ross is trying to say that we've gone from being probably the biggest club in non league football, to something like 6th in league 2. The chances of promotion have now also diminished somewhat now other bigger clubs stand in our way and that no doubt doesn't help to sell the club to potential signings.

Re: RE interview - transfers
Tbh I’d be quite happy with a couple of seasons of mid-table football. We are ahead of what we believe to be our progress plan. So it’s reasonable for the owners to catch their financial breath before looking to move on. For sure we can expect teams like Salford with its billionaire owner to out pace us. But then again look at the NL and see ex league clubs we have passed.
I still expect new players to join but I don’t expect them to be big name (lower league) players, more competent additions to the squad. Players not good enough to be other than L2 bench warmers. And our manager situation needs resolving before we become an interim L2 team.
In Wright, Wilkinson and Angol we have brought in players as good as we could have hoped to attract. I don’t see too many issues with the core squad. Not much to back them up is the issue.
So we go into the new season with some decent players, an unproven manager and a thin squad in terms of quality. But one that should be good enough for mid table. Though I just hope we are not in for a shock when looking at L2 quality. It will be higher than we’ve seen these past 2 years.

Re: RE interview - transfers
All sounds sensible. I think the style of play in L2 will be very different. Don't know how much adjustment will be needed by us. Players will be a fair bit smarter in L2. Remember how industrial the tackling and manhandling in the NL was when we were first there?dOh Nut wrote: ↑Sun Jul 28, 2019 9:57 am Tbh I’d be quite happy with a couple of seasons of mid-table football. Re: RE interview - transfers
I think alot of the manhandling was down to the players knowing that was the only way they knew how to try and stop us and to an extent it worked (Sutton and Bromley).LittleMate wrote: ↑Sun Jul 28, 2019 10:35 amAll sounds sensible. Re: RE interview - transfers
Another thought, as Ross, Danny and Jobi are regarded as Interim appointments, is that putting off players from signing, being concerned that should the management team change then they won't figure in the new managers plans.

Re: RE interview - transfers
When we were in the NL the consistent excuse was that we were missing out on players to League Two teams because said players wanted to remain the the EFL, but now we're there we're still 'bottom of the pile'? shocking.
Think we've done alright with signings so far but christ the squad depth is appalling.

Re: RE interview - transfers
Personally I dislike the term interim. If they consider Ross up to it, offer him the job. If they don’t then bring in someone else. I have little doubt there are experienced managers out there quite capable of handling our situation with tact and sensitivity. The interim label is a nothing cop out, delaying making a decision and I will say it again points to Ling Snr playing a big part in team matters. The manager in all but name. Ruling the roost minus the matchday pressures. Ross remains the assistant but the public face of the team with a nothing title.
Hardly a vote of confidence in Ross either. Nor the other interims. In different circumstances and if we were established in L2, then why not give the interims their chance. But right now ain’t the time for such a huge gamble. But mitigated by having Ling behind the scenes to a degree, he has after all done it before and with success.
Ling is in effect the manager but one who avoids many of the pressures that come with the job. The power behind the scenes. And tbf probably the reason why mid table is achievable.
